PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
Thank you to all the families and students that participated in our annual International Festival. There is a great video on our Facebook page that highlights the diversity of the event. We look forward to celebrating it again in 2025.
Starting next week, we will require a permission slip for school events that are extracurricular and/or supportive of the standards (for example a school pep rally). This is a requirement by the State of Florida and we are working hard to understand all its implications.
There is a lot going on the world. Remember to remain positive. Be grateful.
Michael Singleton
Principal

Curriculum and Testing Updates
This week, students completed Round 1 of the schoolwide Scripps Spelling Bee. Next week, winners from each homeroom will participate in Round 2 to select two winners from each grade level. The final schoolwide Spelling Bee round will take place in January, where one participant will move on to the Orlando Spelling Bee.
DEAW #2 will take place next week in your student’s ELA class. This activity allows OSES to monitor writing development over the school year at all grade levels. It also prepares our students for the statewide Writing assessment that takes place in Grades 4-6.
We are excited to announce that the Great American Teach-In will be held on Wednesday, November 20th. If you are interested in sharing your profession with your student’s class, please contact the teacher via email.
FAST PM #2 will start when students return from the Fall/Thanksgiving Break. Please see the PM #2 schedule below for more details.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Contact Cayce Carter at Cayce.carter@orlandoscience.org with any questions.

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Students had a great time this week presenting their pumpkin projects showing case the character, setting, and/or major events of the story they read! Their pumpkins looked amazing and students were very excited to show them to the class and to see the other pumpkins as well.
In math, students have been practicing writing an addition equation as they listen to an addition story. Students have learned to draw pictures, make jumps on a number line, or use manipulatives to add numbers together.
In writing, students are using their knowledge of irregular words as well as their ability to sound out CVC words to write a complete sentence beginning with an uppercase letter and ending with a period.
FIRST
This week was filled with fun and learning in first grade!
Each class took a turn learning in depth about pumpkins, measuring them in different ways, learning about the parts of a pumpkin, then finally dissecting one and counting their seeds (a very sticky event!)
Students also learned all about Election Day and participated in mock-elections in their classroom. The candidates range from chips & cookies to Paw Patrol Characters. The students enjoyed having a chance to participate in this event that mirrored the national one.
Many classes are rounding out their units in all subjects (math, ELA, science, and social studies) and beginning new ones. Be sure to ask your kiddo what their favorite thing they learned this week is!
SECOND
Mrs. Yeaman's second graders had a great week of hands-on learning! In math we explored shape attributes by comparing and contrasting shapes with a Venn diagram. We also used geoboards to make different size squares. In Science we are learning about gravity's pull on objects and completed an investigation in which we practiced balancing a pencil on our finger. We discussed how gravity pulled the pencil to the ground. We then made different types of bridges to see which kind would hold up the most weight. We are going to continue our investigation next week by completing research and improving our original bridge designs to test again.
THIRD
3rd grade has been learning about dramas in our reading class and improving our writing. In math we’ve been working with geometry explaining parallel lines, and shapes. In Science we’re learning about the needs and parts of plants. In social studies we’ve been working on using maps to find the continents and oceans.
FOURTH
Last week, our students proudly participated in Red Ribbon Week by wearing red to show their support. We were also thrilled to see the amazing presentations of their Natural Disaster brochures that the students created on Canva. They truly showcased their creativity and hard work! Lastly, we are looking forward to our field trip to Wonder Works next week, which promises to be an exciting and educational experience for everyone.
FIFTH
In science, 5th graders learned about saving water through the OUC program. They discovered how drip irrigation systems can help water plants. The students took on a fun challenge where they had to create a drip irrigation system for a park. Their goal was to only use plants that are native to Florida, make sure each area got at least 10 ml of water from the tanks to the plants, and keep the tubing part shorter than 6 inches outside a PVC pipe. Working together, the students came up with clever ideas for their irrigation systems and had opportunities to test and improve their designs to meet all the goals.

SIXTH
Lawrence - World History
In the World History classes, students have been exploring ancient Egypt through a variety of ways, including through notes, virtual field trips, and hands-on activities, such as writing hieroglyphics on actual papyrus paper!
Just as the pyramids are timeless, students’ enjoyment of this unit is everlasting. Make sure to ask your student about what they’ve learned about Egypt!
