Parent-Teacher Conferences
ππΌ Thank you to everyone who was able to come out for parent-teacher conferences. We greatly appreciate your time and these rare, but valuable opportunities to collaborate on our common goals of progress and success for students. We look forward to continuing this important partnership throughout the year! For those who were not able to make it, please don't hesitate to call or email any time!
KMS Spirit Week!
π§‘π€ It's Spirit Week at KMS! Dress up days are oh so fun, and this year, the fun will be amplified with a friendly grade-level competition. Each day, we will track the number of students who participate, and the grade level with the most participation points at the end of the week will earn a little treat, courtesy of our KMS PTO. What a great way to celebrate Homecoming Week! As always, nothing elaborate is required for an outfit to "count." This should be no-cost and no-stress. Whatever you can piece together from your closets, or maybe Halloween totes, will be just fine. Have fun with it!
*A Note for Monday: Please stick to PJs only. No blankets, pillows, or stuffies. Thank you!
Pumpkin Day!

Language Arts
π This week we will finish working with the informational article, β Horses as Healers Around the Worldβ by Carolyn Cory Scoppettone. Then we will move into the first performance task for this unit. In this performance task students will write a 5-paragraph informational essay that answers the question: What can people learn from animals?
π In this lesson students will:
Work through all stages of the writing process: planning, prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
Review the structure of an informational essay.
Write an opening paragraph that includes a central idea/thesis statement and 3 examples of what people can learn from animals.
Write 3 body paragraphs that include research-based evidence that supports the central idea/thesis, including specific facts, details, and examples.
Use precise word choices and explanations of unfamiliar terms.
Use transitions that link ideas and sections of text.
Use standard English conventions, including correct subject-verb agreement, spelling, and punctuation.
Gather information from multiple sources.
π Homework:
15-20 minutes of reading from a book of their choice.
Work that students are unable to complete during class.
Work that students miss when they are out of school for sickness, travel, etc.
Test Retake Assignments: Students just completed the quiz on the informational text, βHorses as Healers Around the World.β Students that scored below a 70% have the option to retake any time before the end of the marking period. Your child may be bringing home a retake slip for this assessment.
Math
Science
π We are continuing our Moon study this week with Phases of the Moon. Your child will be bringing home some note cards to help them study the phases. They need to put the moons in order (the answers will be on the backs of the cards). You can help your child study by testing them with the cards. This is a fun way to learn the phases of the Moon.
π We will also be looking at Solar and Lunar Eclipses. We will be drawing them out in our Science journals and modeling them in class.
π Then by the end of this week, we will be looking at craters. Do you know where craters come from? We will be learning where they originate, categorizing them by size and physical characteristics, and doing a bit of research on where they have hit Earth and the Moon in the past.
π― Also, as a side note, don't forget we have a quiz every Friday! Have a wonderful week!
Social Studies
π This week, we will wrap up the final lessons of our Geography Basics unit. Students will explore the following topics:
- Locating and Using Information from GIS and Satelite Imagery
- Applying Skills of Geographic Inquiry to Analyze Simple Geographic Problems
- Using Images to Answer Geographic Questions
π― Students will take the Geography Basics test on Wednesday, October 16th. They will be encouraged to take their lesson notes home on Thursday to use as study materials over the following days. Students can also access all unit lessons and resources on Google Classroom.
π PowerSchool Updates:
Map Project scores have been added in PowerSchool and an additional atlas activity will be added shortly. Please encourage your child to wrap up any unfinished work and redo failed assignments ASAP.
π» As mentioned above, Google Classroom is a great resource for students (and parents)! All lessons and assignments completed in class are also posted daily to Google Classroom. Students can always revisit the postings and absent students should use Google Classroom to catch up on missed content. Below is video clip I created to give you a quick preview of our Google Classroom layout and how to access assignments. You can also ask your child to show you, as they use it daily!
Choir
πΆ The Fall Choir concert is coming up on October 22 at 7 pm in the high school gym.
β° 5th and 6th grade singers should plan to arrive at 6 pm for a sound check and warm up.
Spanish
