Have you ever considered driving a school bus or riding the bus to support student safety?

I started as a Bus Driver 20 years ago. At the time I was a stay-at-home mom and was looking for additional income for our family. My mother-in-law suggested I become a school bus driver and I initially laughed at her idea. My first thought was that I was too short and doubted I could even reach the pedals. But as I considered my options for part-time work that would allow me to still take care of my kiddos and their after school activities, the schedule of a bus driver had become more and more appealing. So I applied and thought I'd give it a try for a school year and here I am 20 years later! Every time I share my experiences in the life of transportation I share that it is the best job that people just don't know they want!

Just to share some of the amazing reasons that myself and others end up staying in transportation for many, many years:

• The schedule for a driver or para is generally 6:00a-9:00a and 2:00p-5:00p (depends on route)
• This schedule makes for a great schedule when running a personal business;
• If you are a parent at LPS, you have the same time off that your children have;
• If you choose to drive for school field trips you can take advantage of FREE entries to places like the zoo or museums.
• Trips include taking our students to athletic events and many other activities that you can spectate or use the time to read and relax.
• Kids are FUN! Even when kids are challenging, we provide support to manage students with excellent training!
• This job is IMPORTANT and NEEDED! We are providing an important service for many of our families....over 6000 rides each day!
• There is something for everyone...a typical route includes an elementary school and a middle school or high school. We also provide specialized transportation for our students who benefit from additional support. We have drivers who have the same route everyday so they can build those meaningful connections with students and we have drivers who support staff callouts and have an adventure nearly every day!
• It is SUPER fun driving a huge vehicle and it's easy once you receive the training our excellent trainers provide.

The SMARTtag Parent Portal is ready to share with our families. We will be sending a notification via email and text for parents to sign up for the app. This app will allow you access to see where the bus is and if your student was loaded and unloaded. Please watch for this notification and sign up.

The implementation of SMARTtag has been very positive for our staff, students, schools and families. It makes learning students' names easier for our drivers. It identifies the age of students so our drivers are aware of who our kindies and 1st graders are as we require parent pick up at the bus stops. Our office staff is able to enter the system to check if a student is riding or not and if they got on the bus and off at the correct place. The system logs the time, so we are able to share exactly where and what time they got off. The system also provides our drivers with a tool for logging both good and poor behavior for managing our students. Through this system we can email schools and parents so everyone is aware of the behaviors on the bus and can help support a positive atmosphere for all!

ID Cards are expensive to replace. Please help us ensure that your student has their SMARTtag card in a safe place that is easily available for loading and unloading. We are providing replacements, but are limiting the free replacements. Repeated replacements will result in a $5 fee. Thank you for your understanding and support!
