NEWS FROM THE DEN
January 2025
Happy New Year HHE Families!đ
There are just a few things going on this month.
There is no school on the 29 as this is a scheduled professional learning day for staff.
Itâs hard to believe but Kindergarten and new student registration begins February 1 and returning student registration begins February 10 for the 2025-2026 school year. Please ensure you can access PowerSchool so you are ready to register when the time comes. https://www.eips.ca/registration/kindergarten
Thank you to our School Council volunteers for all the work you do in supporting our Coyotes.
During our next meeting on January 9, I will review our 2024-25 school fees and will be asking parents for feedback for the 2025-26 school year. I look forward to seeing everyone. A survey regarding student fees will be sent out to parents on the 10th.
Parental involvement opportunities
How to get involved in your child's education at school.
What to do when the words wonât stick
Do any of these describe your child:
â Practices every night for the spelling test, but still makes many errors?
â Make constant spelling mistakes with the same words again and again?
â Is able to read a word one day, but is unable to decode that same word the next day?
Parents and teachers notice these things in children all the time! The research tells us that in order to remember the words and store them into our long term memory, our brain uses a process called Orthographic Mapping. This process involves the brain making connections between letter sounds and letter names. And guess what? Not all brains are wired to do this process automatically. While some children can be taught to learn a word with just 1-4 practices, it takes others up to 40 times to learn that same word. The good news is that there is a great way to practice word learning by using the Orthographic Mapping technique.
So, how can I work on this process at home?

CBC Music Class Challengeđ„!
Congratulations to the Grade 5/6 French Immersion class at @heritagehillseips for securing a spot in the Top 10 of the @cbc Music Class Challenge! Under the expert guidance of their teacher, Dr. Monique Boyer, students performed a unique arrangement of the Canadian song âLife Isâ by Arkells that highlighted their diverse musical skills. As finalists, they'll be competing against nine other schools in the Elementary Instrumental category of the national music competition.
SCHOOL FEES
Dear Heritage Hills school families,
Under Alberta Educationâs School Fee Regulation, schools must consult with parents prior to setting school fees for the upcoming school year.
Our next school council meeting will be taking place on January 9th, 2024, at 6:00 pm. During that time, Iâll be sharing information about our current fee structure, posing specific questions about priorities, and asking you to provide your feedback as we plan for the next school year. While many of these activities and services enhance studentsâ educational experience, we want to ensure these fees arenât cost-prohibitive for families.
Specifically, we will be asking for input on the following:
- Optional courses and associated fees
- Noon hour supervision
- Field trips and associated fees
- Extracurricular activities
- Non-curricular goods and services (for example, student yearbooks)
For your reference, below is a link to the school fees information located on the Heritage Hills Elementary School website. The webpage includes the current School Fees Schedule for 2024-2025, as well as information on waiver of fees, refunds and student transportation fees.

I understand not all families will be available to attend the meeting but itâs still important we get as much input from the school community as possible. Following the meeting, all information will be shared via email and parents and guardians will have the opportunity to access a google form to provide feedback.
School administration will use feedback provided to help determine fees for next year, which will then be shared at the March school council meeting, posted to our website and shared via link through email.
I look forward to hearing from you on January 9th, 2025.
Sincerely,
Garry Russell, Principal

Coyote Values in Action!
In January, weâll discover the power of Accountability!
Help your family build a strong sense of accountability by setting daily goals and talking about the importance of keeping promises. Encourage your child to share examples of how they or others have shown accountability at home, school or in the community.
Practice Accountability Together: Each family member commits to one goal or responsibility each day for a week. Ex: Completing homework on time, tidying up a shared space, or following through on a promise to a friend.
Share Your Experiences: At dinner, during car rides, or at bedtime, talk about the goals you set and whether you met them.
Reflect Together:
How did it feel to complete your goal or fulfill your responsibility?
What impact did your accountability have on others?
What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
Spot and Celebrate Accountability:
Look for examples of accountability in your community or school.
Ask your child about times theyâve seen classmates or teachers being accountable.
Talk about how those actions made them feel and the positive impact accountability has on everyone.

HOT LUNCH MESSAGE đ
We would like to remind families that our hot lunch program is available to all students and serves as an important fundraiser for our school. We have noticed an increasing number of lunch deliveries to the school, which have become overwhelming and disruptive to the school day. To help us maintain a smooth and organized environment, we ask that families refrain from bringing lunches to school during hot lunch days. We kindly ask that families reserve these special deliveries for occasions such as birthdays or other celebrations.
