Happy Holidays!
This season I am grateful for the Miles community. The first semester went by really fast but was full of great moments. The Walk-a-thon was awesome! It was really cool of the PTO to host the event near the Halloween season. That brought another element which added to the experience for students and staff alike. Miles received notification from the Arizona Department of Education that we were once again an A-rated school. All the high-quality teaching and learning continues to pay off and it is wonderful to be recognized for that work. Also, there were a ton of field trips that took place. Students explored Camp Cooper, the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium and dined in the U of A Student Union among other adventures. Thank you for your tax credit donations which support learning experiences off campus.
With just three weeks left before Winter Break, there are many more opportunities for the Miles community to enjoy. The next Garden Workday is scheduled for Saturday, December 7 at 9am. On December 9th, our middle school musicians and singers will perform at Project MORE beginning at 6pm. Our elementary students in grades 3-5 will perform in the Miles cafeteria on the afternoon of the 13th. During and after that performance, student art will be on display for all to enjoy!
In addition to the activities planned, there is also the business of end of semester assessments. Students of all ages are assessed mid-year to provide insight into how they are progressing academically. It is important that each student comes to school every day and on time. Testing is stressful already. But arriving late or missing a test and having to make it up can be even worse. Check with your child's teacher(s) for test dates so you can be sure to have your lovely human in school.
Lots more good stuff in this newsletter. Keep reading:)
Warmly,
Principal Andrea Steele
Garden News
Hello Miles garden volunteers!
Can you come to this Saturday's garden work day? You are welcome any time from 9:00 a.m. - Noon. The theme is construction! Choose from building and painting a compost bin, cementing mosaic signs, and laying a decorative path. If you have a cordless drill to share, it might come in handy.
Weeding, trash grabbing, chalk drawing, and other fun basics are also options. Something for everyone 🙂
The forecast is for cool, easy weather. Please bring water bottles and sun protection, and wear closed-toed shoes for safety.
Take care,
Anna

This month for Character Strong at Miles is all about Perseverance. One way to think about Perseverance is “pushing yourself through challenges and obstacles.” We all experience challenges in our lives. We all have moments when we feel like we can’t do it or that we want to give up on a big task. It is important to develop tools that help us work through those challenges in order to grow in those moments instead of giving up. How can you practice Perseverance as a family this month? Perseverance is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that help students be at their very best. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like focusing, organizing, and goal-setting.
Many of us have seen people practice Perseverance in ways that have inspired us. Stories are powerful tools for connecting as a family. Protect time this week to share stories about Perseverance with each other (you can use the story prompts to get started). At the end of the conversation, think of 1 way you can practice Perseverance this week
Story Prompts:
A time I (or someone else) showed Perseverance was _____.
An act of Perseverance that changed/challenged me was _____.
Happy Holidays!
