February Update
Mrs. Barbi's Message
“Let us learn to appreciate there will be times when the trees will be bare, and look forward to the time when we may pick the fruit.” -Anton Chekhov
Dear Parkway Families,
What a beautiful reminder from Chekhov that even the barest seasons have their purpose and that brighter, more fruitful times are always ahead. It’s a sentiment we can carry not just into our own lives but into our children’s experiences as well.
Encouraging children to head outside after school, even during these colder, shorter days, is one of the simplest yet most impactful habits we can foster. With warm coats, mittens, and perhaps a pair of sturdy boots, nature becomes a year-round playground and classroom. Outdoor free play has been shown to nurture so many skills that are vital for success—not just academically, but socially and emotionally, too. Whether it’s jumping in piles of leaves, creating imaginary kingdoms in the snow, or simply observing how frost forms on blades of grass, children are developing problem-solving skills, expanding their attention spans, and stretching their creative muscles.
In the spirit of outdoor play, the kindergarteners read Thomas’ Snowsuit by Robert Munsch and were inspired to play in the snow just like the character in the story. Our wonderful kindergarten parents came together to ensure the children were dressed for the occasion, sending them in with their snow gear. The kids had an absolute blast! I always remind them that there’s no such thing as bad weather—just bad gear—and thanks to their warm and cozy outfits, everyone was able to enjoy the winter fun to the fullest.
Of course, as Chekhov might agree, balance is key. We know we’re up against a fierce competitor: the pull of on-demand entertainment and the bright, engaging allure of screens. Screen time itself isn’t inherently bad—it’s how we use it and how much we use it that matters. When balanced with active, imaginative play, the results are healthier, happier children who are better equipped to tackle the demands of life and learning.
This is an excellent time of year to consider simple changes to your family’s routine that encourage more outdoor time. Perhaps set a family goal: “30 minutes outside, no matter the weather.” You might even find that the fresh air, even in February, is invigorating for all of you! It also gives children the space to explore and entertain themselves in ways that screens simply cannot replicate.
As we walk through these winter months together, let’s embrace the bare trees and frosty mornings as opportunities to build resilience, foster creativity, and create moments of joy with our children.
Have a wonderful month,
Suzanne Barbi
