Language Arts
📝 This week we will continue our first performance task for this unit. In this performance task students will write a 5-paragraph informational essay that answers the question: What can people learn from animals? Students worked this week to brainstorm ideas and write an introduction paragraph. Next week we will work on paragraphs 2-5.
📋 In this lesson students will:
Work through all stages of the writing process: planning, prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
Review the structure of an informational essay.
Write an opening paragraph that includes a central idea/thesis statement and 3 examples of what people can learn from animals.
Write 3 body paragraphs that include research-based evidence that supports the central idea/thesis, including specific facts, details, and examples.
Use precise word choices and explanations of unfamiliar terms.
Use transitions that link ideas and sections of text.
Use standard English conventions, including correct subject-verb agreement, spelling, and punctuation.
Gather information from multiple sources.
📖 Homework:
15-20 minutes of reading from a book of their choice.
Work that students are unable to complete during class.
Work that students miss when they are out of school for sickness, travel, etc.
Test Retake Assignments
Math
💯 We will also be working on quiz retakes and studying for a Chapter 1 Test! See the math log below for more details!
Science
🤩 Hello Parents! I just want to say that last week in science class, all of your children did AWESOME! We had so much fun testing how craters are formed on the Moon. Your children tested, analyzed, graphed their results, and wrote a conclusion statement. Everyone worked together and got the job done.
🌑 This week in science we will be concluding our study of craters by analyzing data taken from craters on the Moon to predict how many more might hit the Moon. We will be looking at Meteorites that have hit Earth in the past, what happened to them, and if we expect any more to hit. We will be looking at data on craters that have hit the Moon and speculating what would have happened if they hit the Earth. Using maps we will determine what kind of damage would they do and how big would the crater be.
📝 At the end of the week, we will be taking a quiz on tides, eclipses, and Moon craters. Your child will be able to use their journals for the quiz so please make sure they are keeping up with it in class. Thank you and have a great week!

🧭 Scores for the Geography Basics test have been posted to PowerSchool and we have reviewed the test together in class. All students are offered the option to take an ALTERNATE version of this test if they did not score satisfactorily. Students will need to complete a checklist which includes creating a study plan, making study cards, and obtaining a signature from an adult at home. They also still have access to the study materials I shared via Google Classroom (See Below). All retakes must be completed by October 25th.
💯 All Marking Period 1 assignments have been updated in PowerSchool. Students are expected to complete and turn in any outstanding assignments by Wednesday, November 30th. Please review PowerSchool with your child and encourage them to tie up any loose ends ASAP. Thank you!
Choir
🎶 The 5-12 choir concert is next Tuesday, October 22, in the high school gym at 7 p.m.
⏰ Singers should be there by 6 for a warmup and soundcheck.
🥸 6th graders are invited to wear Halloween costumes for the concert. Costumes must comply with the school dress code and may not have masks covering the nose and mouth, blood and gore, or weapons. Additionally they need to be able to fit on the risers and not block the singers behind them from view.
Spanish
🐲 6th grade should be done with their quiz retakes by now. This week, we will learn about the Chupacabras legend and watch Chupa (a PG movie).
🗣️ We will also have a visitor, Ben McCarthy, on October 22nd. Ben is the husband of our school photographer/media specialist, Chloe. Ben is from Argentina and moved to the US when he was 15.
