Ripon Cathedral School Update

Year 5 have had a wonderful time exploring Lindisfarne. Even though there was a little bit of rain, it didn't dampen the spirits of the children who enjoyed all the different activities on the island. Creating beach art of different sea creature was one of the children's favourite parts of the visit. They enjoyed learning about the Vikings and wrote some fabulous poetry at the priory which they shared at our impromptu poetry recital. Throughout the visit the children have been fantastically well behaved. Well done Year 5.

Year 6 had a lovely morning celebrating European Day of Languages by dressing in black, red and yellow to explore a fascinating language - German. Throughout the morning, they used some simple consonant changes to understand and translate some German words and to count form one to ten. They had great fun completing a 'mini quiz' and thoroughly enjoyed looking at how similar German and English are.

After this, they headed outside to find 14 words scattered around the school grounds. Using only a map, they found the vocabulary and used synonyms of the English words to work out the German. Hund = hound or dog and Volk = folk or people were just two of these. Ein wunderbarer Tag!

On languages day in Year 4, we looked at Spain and the children came to school in the colours of the Spanish flag. We looked at the Spanish festive "Las fallas de Valencia", the annual festival welcoming spring and celebrating creativity, arts and crafts. We then worked collaboratively to create a piece of art work to represent the festival.

Year 5 have been very busy completing activities in preparation for their residential trip to Lindisfarne but they still managed to fit in some fun activities for European Languages Day. Throughout the day they identified all the European countries in wordsearches, had a class quiz where the children had to identify the country from an outline, flags and landmarks and finally they set themselves the challenge of saying hello in as many of the languages as possible. We will seeing on Monday how many we can all remember!

Reception rocked it in their red and yellow clothes for our Spanish Day. We are fans of musical instruments in Reception, so we had a go at making some clickety castanets and then playing them as we attempted some flamenco dancing. There were some seriously good moves going on! We practised using the Spanish greetings we have been learning, and enjoyed listening to Mrs Shawcross read The Very Hungry Caterpillar in Spanish.

Year 1 were very interested in the Welsh flag with its big red dragon! This led us to choose the Welsh language for Languages day. We have enjoyed using the greeting bore da for our register and learning the traditional Welsh nursery rhyme mi Welais Jac y do.

We had a very exciting European languages day in Year 2, celebrating and exploring Spanish culture. Firstly, we made our own bingo boards based on the colours we have been learning with Mrs Shawcross. Next, we looked at some of the aspects of Flamenco dancing, Golpe (clap), Golpe 2,3 ( hands on hips and stomp ) sidesteps, Floreo ( hand work) and Ole!

We concluded our day with tasting foods of Spanish origin, grapefruit, lemon, lime, bread with olive oil and our favourite was traditional lemonade. We had the best day .

The children in Year 3 learned all about two different countries on Tuesday. They found out lots of facts about the country that Mrs Bradley is from – Slovakia. Mrs Bradley talked about her favourite places in Slovakia and showed some amazing pictures of national parks. Year 3 also learned about Sicily, a place where Mrs Spencer’s family is from. Mrs Spencer showed the children places where her family live as well as places she had visited. Year 3 made Slovakian and Sicilian flags, took part in a quiz, practised counting 1 -5 in Slovakian and Italian and tried some Slovakian and Italian foods.

It was fabulous to welcome the Open the Book team back into school for the first time in this academic year. They presented the story of Samson with the help of a group of Year 5 pupils. We enjoyed joining in with the story and learnt how it is important to listen to God.

At our celebration worship we announced our Stars of the Week. Well done to all the recipients.

Thank you to those parents who responded to last week's survey. We found that about half of you would prefer online appointments, and the rest would like to meet teachers in school. Therefore, as last year, we will run two different evenings for each class. One evening will give parents the opportunity to book an online appointment, and the other will be face to face. More details will follow soon.

Collective Worship is a very important part of our school. Over the next term there are a number of worship sessions that parents and carers are welcome to attend.

We are very fortunate that our 'Friends of the School' group raises a lot of much needed funds and also organises social events which get the school community together. The AGM is on Wednesday 4th October at 7pm in the Claro Lounge (on Ripon market place). The committee would love to welcome people to the meeting and have stressed that being part of the Friends really does not involve giving up your time or committing to a lot of events. What they are really interested in are new ideas! Please head along to the meeting or ask at school for more details.
