PreCollege & Summer Programs
Summer of 2024

Make This Summer Impactful!
Hey Berkley Bears! No summer plans?
Consider spending time exploring a career interest by attending a summer program for high school students offered by a college or university. Programs vary in terms of intensity, cost, length and location. Colleges will host their summer programs on campus or virtually. We are including the links to many college programs offered throughout the US. Please note that there are many other colleges that offer Pre-College Summer programs not included in the list. You can do an internet search to find other programs as well.
While we encourage you to explore your options for summer experiences, and we help by collecting information for you, we cannot endorse any of the programs below. Many of these programs have early deadlines and fill up quickly. Scholarships are often available. This list is a work in progress as many schools add new offerings all the time!
Please also note that because many of these programs are "pay to play" type experiences, most of the time, they do not give a student an advantage when it comes to admission into the college. These are great opportunities to explore career interests, make connections, and experience a glimpse of college life. Spending your summer working or volunteering can also be an incredible way to build your resume and life experience.
If you have any questions, please contact Christina Belsky, College and Career Counselor at Berkley High School.

Why are internships for high school students a good idea?
from the College Essay Guy...
Most high school summer internships are unpaid (womp, womp). So why would you want to work for free when you can wait tables or life guard for cold hard cash? Internships are a great way to explore your interests before you commit to a major. Nobody wants to spend three years and thousands of dollars pursuing a major and potential career only to discover that, actually, working in [insert industry here] really isn’t your cup of tea. Also--let’s be honest--high school summer internships can sometimes look good on college applications and they’ll help you get even better internships in college. At Boston University Summer Journalism Academy (BUSJ), students not only have the opportunity to have award-winning working journalists as instructors, but they also have the chance to experience Boston University and the city of Boston.
For 16 years Boston University College of Communication has offered this program to high school students to teach them core skills in news reporting, interviewing, and writing, focusing on hands-on experience in and around Boston and their home communities. Our photojournalism program taught by former Boston Globe photographer, Steve Haines, prepares students, like Taylor Coester (a BUSJ alum and now a BU student), to work alongside journalists in capturing the best photo for their stories. Parents and students enjoy hearing that no third-party vendors are involved, and they can experience an authentic pre-college experience at a college on their list.
Students decide if they would like to attend our program in-person or virtually. Applications for the on-campus session June 24 to July 12 are due April 19. Applications for learn-at-home sessions starting June 17, July 1 and July 15 are due May 10.
If you have a student who wants a real college experience this summer and wants to pursue a communication degree, encourage them to learn more by visiting www.summerjournalism.org and applying soon, as limited seats are available for our in-person sessions.
