Summer Health & Safety Update 2024
Summer is Approaching!!
Dear LPS Families,
It is hard to believe that another school year is coming to an end! As we approach the summer break, we hope that this newsletter finds you well and ready for a season of fun, relaxation, and quality family time. Below you will find some general summer health and safety tips from the LPS nursing team.
In addition, we have a few reminders as we approach the end of the school year. We realize that this time of year is challenging for many of our students with seasonal allergies and wanted to remind you to please have your student take their allergy medications at home before school. We do not stock or administer allergy medications in the LPS clinics to treat seasonal allergy symptoms.
If your student has any medication stocked in the clinic, the nursing staff would also like to remind you to please pick it up before the last day of school. Students are not allowed to have possession and/or pick up medications from the nurse's office, so please plan for a parent or guardian to pick any medications up from the clinic at your student's school on June 13th. Any medication that is not picked up by June 13th will be disposed of. We thank you in advance for your cooperation!
We wish you all a healthy, safe and fun summer!
Sun Safety
Water Safety
Bike & Boat Safety
- Wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating or on any personal watercraft. See here for more on boat and lake safety.
- Helmets should always be worn when riding bicycles, as they can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries. Ensure that bikes and helmets are the appropriate size and give reminders of safe bike riding practices (ex. always wearing a helmet, checking the street before crossing and staying visible to drivers).
Tick Safety
Ticks are most commonly found in grassy, brushy or wooded areas and on animals. Here are some important tips and resources:
Use EPA-registered insect repellents on anyone over the age of 3.
Avoid brushy and wooded areas with high grass when possible.
Walk in the center of trails.
Carefully check your clothing, gear and pets for ticks after being outdoors.
Shower within 2 hours of coming indoors - this is a good opportunity to check for ticks and wash off unattached ticks.
When coming inside from potentially tick-infested areas, be sure to perform a full body check (see here for tick check illustrations).
If a tick is found attached to the skin, remove it as soon as possible and check out this resource for tips on effectively removing it.
If a rash or fever develops within a few weeks after a tick is removed, please contact your primary care doctor.
Nutrition: Healthy Summer Treat Ideas
Who doesn't love a frozen sweet treat in the summer?! We certainly do & wanted to share some healthy summer treat ideas for you and your families to try.
TIPS FOR NUTRITIOUS & DELICIOUS SMOOTHIES:
- Add in a frozen banana for natural sweetness & to thicken your smoothie.
- Frozen berries are always great additions and a wonderful source of fiber.
- Mix in some frozen cauliflower rice (we recommend starting with 1/2 cup per smoothie) for a sneaky veggie and to thicken up your smoothie.. you can't even taste it!
- Include Greek yogurt and/or protein powder to make them more balanced & satiating.
- Start with less liquid (water, milk, plant-based milk) and add in more to reach desired texture.
- Add yummy toppings for extra crunch/flavor or to make them more appealing to your kids! Some of our recommendations include: your favorite granola, chocolate chips or cacao nibs, fresh fruit, dried coconut flakes, a drizzle of your favorite nut/seed butter, goji berries or raisins.
Fruit & Yogurt Cones
Fill an ice cream cone with some yogurt and your students favorite fruits for a fun, healthy snack. You can even dip the top of the cone in melted chocolate for some additional sweetness!
Watermelon Fruit Pizza
Who doesn't love watermelon on a hot summer day?!?! Try to take it to the next level by adding some vanilla yogurt and fruit toppings.
Banana Sushi
This is a fun way to gets kids of all ages involved in making their own healthy snacks. There are lots of variations that you can do to personalize this treat. You could spread peanut butter/sun butter all over the banana, roll it in the topping of your choice, and then slice into little sushi rolls or dip a banana into melted chocolate, roll it in the topping of your choice, freeze, and then slice into little sushi rolls.
