November 2023 District Newsletter
Barrington School District
November 17, 2023
Hello Barrington Families;
Barrington’s one and only Dancing With the Barrington Stars is this Saturday, November 18th at 2pm at the Middle School. This is a must see event with a new twist this year. Our competitors will be showing off their dance moves as well as their Lip Sync skills. I can’t wait to see all of the performances!
The Budget Process is well underway for the 2024/25 school year. Unlike last year which was less than a 1% increase, we are looking at a more substantial increase due to a variety of factors. First and foremost, we need to continue to make progress toward academic achievement for all. This means looking at potential positions and programming. Additionally, we are continuing to see large increases in the cost of contracted services, supplies, and materials. We will continue to work collaboratively to prepare a fiscally responsible budget that will also meet the needs of our growing and changing community.
On October 17th we began with a preliminary Budget Presentation. This presentation looks at the needs of the District over the next 5 years and adheres to our Mission, Vision, and 5 year goals. This presentation was followed by a November 7th meeting where the Administrative Team spoke to the increases as well as the decreases in the proposed budget. We will continue our budget conversations at the upcoming November 21st, December 5th and December 12th meetings.
Here are the important dates which will conclude this process:
● January 2, 2024 Budget Hearing 6:00pm, BMS cafeteria
● February 10, 2024 Deliberative Session 9:00am, BMS cafeteria
● March 12, 2024 Voting BMS cafeteria
I would also like to take a moment to explain another timely process, snow
day calls. This is an area that I may not always get right and certainly not
everyone will agree with my decision however, I will always make my
decision based on student safety at the time in which I need to make the
call. Please know that you as a parent/guardian can alway make the decision to keep your child home. We all have different thoughts and feelings when it comes to driving in inclement weather.
Many of you may not be aware of the logistics surrounding how a
delayed opening, early dismissal, or snow day is determined. I have been in
contact with many individuals over the past couple of weeks to ensure that we are all on the same page. Here are the steps that occur:
1. If there is a clear cut storm arriving then I will work to make the call
the evening prior. Nobody likes to anxiously wait and wonder about a
snow day and certainly most of us would rather our sleep not get
interrupted at 5:00am.
2. If the timing of the storm requires a morning decision, that process
begins at 4:00am when the Bus Company calls the Road Agent in
Barrington to discuss the conditions of the road. Please keep in mind
that it takes approximately 4 hours to safely clear and treat the roads of
Barrington (if they are fully staffed). The timing of the storm will then dictate the time at which we can expect the roads to be travelable and as a result the potential start of school.
3. In the meantime, I am on the phone with area Superintendents to
discuss the conditions in their towns and what they are thinking. This
is primarily done given that we send our high school age students to 3
different towns and I want to do my best to ensure the safety of all
students. It is possible that Barrington is delayed or closed and our
high school towns may not be making the same call. Please
understand that busing availability will follow the decision that I
make in Barrington.
4. The Bus Company then calls me to discuss the conditions and we
make a decision based on all gathered information. I will strive to
have this information out to you all prior to 5:30am. Please make sure
that we have your accurate contact information in our system. The
Administrative Assistants at each of the schools can assist if needed.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday with family and friends doing what makes you happy.
Respectfully,
Curriculum and Instruction
Good Evening Barrington Families!
Teachers and administrators have been quite busy this fall with regards to curriculum and instruction as we focus on our District Academic 5-Year Goal:
- Strengthen our teaching processes and research-based practices in order to provide inclusive, effective, engaging, and rigorous academic instruction and support for all students.
All teachers across the district have implemented our new math programs, which is a huge undertaking of time, experience, and energy from our teachers. We continue to provide professional services in training for these programs as well as best practices in mathematics instruction. The ELA Committee has been meeting since last year with a focus on the Science of Reading and curriculum as it pertains to reading and writing programming for all grade levels. District-wide consultation will continue in the Science of Reading throughout this year K-8 in all content areas to address the reading needs of our students. If you would like more information regarding the Science of Reading click here.
Throughout this year, I have seen so many wonderful things happening in classrooms.
Collaborative and creative math lessons, Pokemon reading, wonderful writing projects infused with art, middle school students presenting their projects, and so much more!

Technology
This month's focus is on Classroom Single Sign On.
Did you know that the Barrington School District uses a Single Sign On (SSO) system called Clever? Clever assists students and teachers in streamlining access to educational resources within the learning environment.
Here is a closer look at some of the advantages:
Simplified Access Management:
Clever SSO simplifies the access to learning content by allowing students, teachers, and administrators to log in once and gain seamless access to a variety of educational applications, tools, and resources. This eliminates the need for multiple usernames and passwords, reducing the burden on students, staff and IT administrators. Younger children can use a "Clever Badge" which is basically a QR code that uses the Chromebook camera to log in.
Time and Resource Savings:
With Clever SSO, valuable instructional time is maximized as students and teachers can quickly access the tools they need without the frustration of navigating through multiple login screens. This efficiency extends to our Tech Support staff who can save time on user account management and troubleshooting login issues by simulating the user's login.
Enhanced Security:
Clever SSO helps improve security by reducing the likelihood of weak passwords or password sharing. It centralizes authentication processes, allowing for better control over user access and permissions. We have the ability to implement multi-factor authentication for an additional layer of security. Clever helps us comply with NH laws around student and staff privacy by hiding PII (Personally Identifiable Information) through the use of access Tokens.
Seamless Integration of Applications:
The Barrington School District uses a diverse range of educational applications. Clever SSO facilitates the integration of these applications into a unified platform, creating a cohesive digital ecosystem. This integration ensures that teachers and students can easily transition between various tools, fostering a more connected and collaborative learning environment. Teachers can curate their own applications and create unique teacher portals so students have access to only what they need.
Data Privacy and Compliance:
Another way that Clever helps us comply with NH laws around student and staff data privacy is that Clever SSO adheres to strict data privacy standards, ensuring that sensitive student information is handled securely. Compliance with regulations such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is crucial in educational settings, and Clever SSO supports schools in maintaining the confidentiality and privacy of student data.
User-Friendly Experience:
The intuitive interface of Clever reduces the learning curve for all users, promoting widespread adoption and acceptance of the technology across various age groups.
Centralized Dashboard for Administrators:
Clever provides the IT team with a centralized dashboard where we can manage user accounts, monitor application usage, and track analytics. This centralized control enhances oversight, making it easier for us to ensure that the right individuals have access to the appropriate resources.
In summary, Clever Single Sign-On allows us to centrally manage our digital resources, in a secure, efficient, and collaborative digital learning environment. Clever plays an important role in helping the district meet its 5 year goals while serving as a foundational system for integrating technology into the classroom.
Thanksgiving is right around the corner, I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday.
Facilities
Hello,
The facilities department has been busily working to set up the Lip Sync battle for this weekend. We have had a lot of set up for the different activities throughout the district over the past few weeks. Barrington is such a busy, engaged community! The custodial and maintenance staff will enjoy a couple of days off for Thanksgiving. Please join me in thanking them for all that they do for us each day.
We had to salt for the first time with a little taste of winter. We have all of the buildings geared up with salt and shovels and ready for whatever mother nature has in store this year.
The mountains have started opening for the ski season, this is always a good reminder of things to come. One of the great things about New England is the changing of the seasons. We hope you are getting ready and enjoy the next season upon us.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Best,
