THE LEAD DOG
The BHS Newsletter, 6th Edition: Mon., Sept. 16, 2024
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL...
Students, Parents, Faculty, and Staff,
Homecoming week is already here! It's hard to believe we are six weeks into the school year. The BHS Student Council has done an amazing job of planning out an exciting week. From the dress-up "Theme Days" to the Homecoming Coronation, it is going to be a great week to be a Greyhound!
Don't forget we start Homecoming festivities this evening with our traditional parade, community pep rally, and "Burning of the B". The parade will start at 6:30 pm at the Square on Main St. and culminate at the football field. Once everyone gets settled in, we'll have the community pep rally, "Burning of the B," and fireworks! We hope everyone can come out and support all the organizations represented in the parade. We have well over 30 floats this year. We encourage you and your family to attend the football game, coronation, band, and Starlette performance this Friday. And students... don't forget about the "Barn Dance" on Saturday night.
I'll leave you with a thought from John Gordon, "We don't give up because it's hard. We give up because we get discouraged. That's why it's so important to encourage yourself and your team."
"Everyone has a role in our students' education... the students, teachers and staff, the parents, and the community... Go Hounds!"
***To keep up with everything "Boerne HS," please check our school website and your school email periodically. Also, follow Boerne HS on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for the latest updates.***

Did you know? Homecoming Mum History...
It may surprise you to learn this Texas tradition didn’t, in fact, start in Texas! It is generally recognized that the Homecoming tradition originated at the University of Missouri around 1911. It took a little more than two decades for the flower to make their way into our great state of Texas. Not too long after this tradition hit it off, Texas boys started giving mums to their homecoming dates in the form of corsages. Over the decades, these mums stayed fairly simple, that is, until the amazing 1990s.
In the 1990s, homecoming mums started to become more elaborate and eventually grew to the mammoth size they are today. Now they include a huge silk flower, tons of large ribbons, charms, bows, bells, cowbells, stuffed animals, perhaps the high school mascot, and even LED lights in some cases! Everything really is bigger in Texas!
Today, you’ll see gals wearing their homecoming mums around their necks because they are just too Texas-sized amazing to wear anywhere else. Typically, the mums are as wide as the girl’s shoulders and go down past her waist. Girls aren’t the only ones that get in on the action. Guys also wear smaller mums on their arms called garters. Normally, they’re made to match the mum that the girl was wearing.

- Greyhound Football traveled to Medina Valley last week. They jumped out to a fast start and never looked back as they defeated the Panthers 31-7 for their 2nd win of the year. Homecoming is this Friday, and the Hounds will host the SA East Central Hornets. Kickoff Friday will be at 7 p.m. Go, Hounds!
- The Boerne HS Cross Country team traveled to the campus of Texas A&M for their meet last week. The meet hosted some of the top talent in the State, including many 6A schools. The Boerne Boys team placed 5th out of 42 teams. Only one other 5A team placed ahead of them. The Girls placed 11th out of 54 teams. It was a great experience versus stiff competition. The teams also took a tour of the campus while they were there. Their next meet will be on the state course at the McNeil HS Invitational at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Congrats, and keep it up, Hounds!
- Last week, Greyhound Team Tennis took two matches down to the wire but came away just short, losing to Champion on Tuesday, 10-9, and Alamo Heights 11-8 on Friday. They have moved to 10-3 for the year and 3-2 in the district. This week, the Hounds are off. Next week, they will pick back up on their district schedule and face Peiper HS and Kerrville Tivy. Good luck, Hounds!
- Boerne HS Water Polo teams took on Brandeis HS and Clark HS this past week. Both teams came up short on the scoreboard but continue to improve and have fun each week. Both boys and girls play this Saturday against Marshall and Champion. Good luck, Hounds!!!
- The Boerne High Volleyball team lost two matches last week to Smithson Valley and Champion HS. They are 17-8 on the year and 2-3 in district. Tomorrow night, they travel to Alamo Heights for their next district match. They will be off on Friday. Good luck, ladies!

Boerne HS Campus Behavior Expectations...
Parents,
We ask that you review our "Campus Behavior Expectations" with your student. If your student wants to be successful at Boerne HS academically, socially, and emotionally, these three simple, easy expectations can be followed. As faculty and staff, we plan to model these behaviors to our students daily. We will be visiting with and reminding our students about these expectations consistently and ask that you do the same.
Be prompt and productive - be where you are supposed to be, when you are supposed to be there, and do what you are supposed to do.
Have respect for yourself and others - when you have respect, you make good, thoughtful choices considering everyone's feelings and beliefs.
See something, say something - be a voice for someone when they can't. If you see or know something is wrong, alert an adult you know ASAP. Don't overlook something you know is wrong.
