2025 Penn-Del AER Awards and Scholarships
The 2025 Penn-Del AER Awards Committee is currently accepting nominations/applications for the following:
- Penn-Del AER Richard L. Welsh Service Award (WELSH) - To be eligible for the Welsh Award, an individual must be a current member of AER and not a current member of the AER Board of Directors. Nominees do not have to be direct service providers.
- Elinor Long Educator of the Year Award (ELEY) - This award highlight the achievements and dedication of individuals to the field of visual impairment. The awardee is encouraged to be an AER member, but it is not a requirement.
- 2025 Penn-Del AER $1000 Student Scholarship - Students who are pursuing certification related to the field of visual impairment and are a member of the Penn-Del AER Chapter are eligible for this scholarship.
Nominations/Applications are due by February 3, 2025.
Museums for All
Museums for All is a national, branded access program that encourages individuals of all backgrounds to visit museums regularly and build lifelong museum habits. It is open to participation by any type of museum — including art, history, natural history/anthropology, and general museums, children’s museums, science centers, planetariums, nature centers, historic houses/sites, zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, and arboretums.

Strategies for Teaching Students Who Are Blind to Use Image Descriptions When Paired with Tactile Graphics or Digital Content - The goal of this study is to explore the training, knowledge, and instructional practices of TSVIs related to the use and teaching of image descriptions.

Blind and Low Vision Students in CTE - The goal of the survey is to understand what is working well in Career and Technical Education (CTE) settings for blind and low vision students, and to collect field-based evidence on effective practices.

The Active Learning Space "approach is not just about a piece of equipment, such as a “Little Room” or a HOPSA dress, but rather it refers to a total approach for promoting the development of individuals with severe multiple disabilities. The Open Hands, Open Access (OHOA): Deaf-Blind Intervener Learning Modules
Although initially created for interveners of the deafblind, classroom teachers and related service providers have found these modules helpful to their educational practice. Many of the strategies and resources can be used with other students with additional complex needs. Topic areas in this free module series include:
- Impact of DeafBlindness on Learning (7 modules)
- Communication (5 modules)
- Promoting Learning (8 modules)
- Preparing for adult life (3 modules)
APH Hive
- Career Readiness for Students with Multiple Impairments: In this course, discover how educators can help students with complex needs and visual impairment improve the success rate of entering the workforce as they transition to adult life.; 1.5 ACVREP Hours
- Engaging Students Using I-M-ABLE: Teaching reading using braille can be a challenging task, especially due to the diversity of students with visual impairments and additional disabilities. If you are working with students who have difficulty learning to read braille using traditional approaches, the Individualized Meaning-Centered Approach to Braille Literacy Education (I-M-ABLE) with its nontraditional approach and supplemental materials may help engage and motivate your student to learn to read and write using braille.; 10 ACVREP Hours
- Using the Sensing and Learning Approach with Sensorimotor Stage Learners: The Sensing and Learning Approach supports team collaboration and highly effective instruction for learners with complex needs. Sensing and Learning (2023)

Keys to Educational Success: Teaching Students with Visual Impairments and Multiple Disabilities (2016)
This book "helps educators unlock the learning potential of their students by providing key program strategies that can be directly applied to classroom learning routines."
I-M-ABLE: Individualized Meaning-Centered Approach to Braille Literacy Education (2016)
"I-M-ABLE, or the Individualized Meaning-Centered Approach to Braille Literacy , is an innovative, individualized, student-centered method for teaching braille and making it exciting for children who have difficulties learning braille."
Hold Everything! Twenty “Stay-Put” Play Spaces For Infants and Preschoolers with Sensory Impairments and Other Special Needs (2004)
Created by the Ohio Center for Deafblind Education, this booklet provides 20 initial ideas for developing “stay-put” play spaces for children with sensory impairments and other special needs.
Assessment of Biobehavioral States: Supporting Availability for Learning for Students with Multiple Disabilities including Deaf-Blindness & Profound Intellectual & Multiple Disabilities (2016)
Created by Chris Russel as part of the New York DeafBlind Collaborative, the Assessment of Biobehavioral States document helps teams identify strategies and biobehavioral states to support learning.
Tools to Address Assessment and Instruction for Students with the Most Significant Challenges (2022):
Complied by Kate Hurst as part of the Texas DeafBlind Outreach "this document is a compilation of a variety of articles, handouts, and forms that have been collected and used by staff with TSBVI Outreach Programs for a number of years and which are frequently requested."
Classroom Observation Instrument for Educational Environments Serving Students with Deaf-Blindness (2006)
This is a "research-based tool designed to help guide and inform educators’ decisions about their students with severe and profound disabilities including deafblindness. The COI is comprised of three main sections: a teacher interview, a review of the student’s cumulative folder, and an observation rubric.
Beyond Arm’s Reach: Enhancing Distance Vision (1992)
An oldie but a goodie, "This book is designed to enhance distance visual efficiency for children with low vision, and includes 4 chapters, with 64 sequential lessons." Note: Some lesson materials may need to be updated. - Available through Bookshare.
Look At Me: A Resource Manual for the Development of Residual Vision in Children with Multiple Disabilities (1982)
An oldie but a goodie, "Look At Me is a complete resource for educators working with visually/multiply handicapped as well as those having low vision as their only disability." Note: Some materials in the Vision Stimulation Activities (p. 75) may need to be updated. - Available through Bookshare.

During this informative session, we will cover essential updates and provide guidance to ensure a smooth and successful census process. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and connect with colleagues across the state.

The Pennsylvania-Delaware Chapter of AER invites you to participate in their annual conference as they focus on Sharing our Stories and Continuing Our Legacy. This nationally respected conference offers a notable line-up of professionals who will present three general sessions, 35 concurrent sessions, an exhibitor hall with a large group of exhibitors on Thursday’s Exhibitor Day, professional poster presentations, the Penn-Del AER awards banquet, their AER Chapter meeting, and a tempting silent auction!

The third session in this networking series will focus on newer intersection designs, such as roundabouts and channelized turn lanes, which are rapidly gaining popularity. We will review the basic features of these intersections, discuss access considerations and current regulations, and explore teaching strategies to promote independent travel across these often challenging intersections.

Getting Started with CVI Assessment
Participants will explore a multitude of assessments available to address the unique needs of every student with CVI, a brain-based visual impairment. The session will include a walk-through of a sample assessment form, providing a practical understanding of its components and usage. We will unpack the most common assessments and share some new and upcoming assessments on the horizon. Additionally, the discussion will focus on how these assessments inform the educational team, guiding the development of individualized education plans (IEPs) and tailored support strategies.

The goal of this group is to send out resources, event information, and contacts that can benefit your family and child. It is an easy way for you to get updates and take advantage of any available opportunities.
Educators can now subscribe to the FRG newsletter! Stay up to date with the latest opportunities for families. The sign-up form will simply ask you to identify your role, as well as specify which disability category and which age range you are interested in. Then you’re good to go!
