BEHAVIOR GRADES AND ELIGIBILITY
New England Public School will be in a slow transition from traditional grading to Standards Based Grading. This will take years to come to fruition. To begin this process, we have decided to start with behavior before academics. This will give teachers, students, and parents a small taste of what Standards Based Grading looks like, and it will hopefully prepare them for what is to come. Please feel free to research the differences, but the gist is this...
Traditional Grading =
giving a grade on an assignment (50%, 90%), but the students and parents just see the title of the assignment (Unit 1 Quiz). What does that even mean? What did my child learn? How do I know what they know or donβt know? How does the teacher know the studentβs educational gaps based on this information?Standards Based Grading =
giving a score based on the standard alone (ex. Represent and understand a fraction as a number on a number line). This will tell the parent, student, and teacher exactly what the student knows and doesn't know.Grades will be based off the scales below.
4 = advanced/exceeds expectations
- 3 = proficient/meets expectations
- 2 = approaching proficiency/meets some expectations
- 1 = beginner/does not meet expectations
Again, we will start with behaviors. Your child has received behavior grades for most of the last quarter. This was a trial run for both students and staff. After practicing for weeks, we are now ready to begin the next phase, which is holding students accountable for the decisions they are making. Beginning next week, students will begin receiving consequences for their actions. Students will receive the following consequences for their behaviors.
Students who participate in extracurricular activities
- a β1β in any area = ineligible for the 1st game of the week following the ineligibility report
- 3 β2sβ in any area = ineligible for the 1st game of the week following the ineligibility report
Students who do not participate in extracurricular activities
- a β1β in any area = 2 days of detention
- 3 β2sβ in any area = 2 days of detention
Students will not receive double consequences, meaning, they will not be ineligible for a game and receive detention. It will be one or the other. Kinder-3rd grade will receive recess detention at school, and students in grades 4-12 will receive detention after school. Please note, to check your child's behavior grades, you must login on a computer. For some reason, they do not display on a cell phone.
ATTENDANCE EMAIL
If your child will be absent, tardy, has transportation changes, or if you need to submit a doctor's note, please use our New England attendance email to notify the office.
