Leader in Me
Burton Elementary School, along with other schools in the Berkley School District are Leader in Me Schools. Leader in Me (LiM) is an evidence-based, comprehensive school-improvement model—developed in partnership with educators that empowers students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in a global community. Leader in Me is about empowering your child to reach their full potential while ultimately finding their voice.
Since the start of the school year your child has been learning about the 7 Habits. Burton teachers have introduced vocabulary such as "Be Proactive, Reactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Priority, Think Win-Win, Emotional Bank Accounts, Withdrawls, and Deposits.
Parent-Teacher Conferences provided an opportunity to learn about your child as a leader at school, however, they can also be a leader at home. This week, think about different leadership roles for your Blue Jay at home.
With the start of construction at Burton, families need to plan differently so they can arrive on time. Have your child be in charge of their items for school, they can be a Materials Manager or a School Specialist (they specialize in school so they can pack their backpack, get their snack, fill their water bottle) so they can help the family to be on time each morning.
All Things Halloween

Burton Bond Update
Please note, the map above is not exact or to scale. Just to give an idea of the ongoing construction.
Bond Update:
This is the first phase of our construction work. As a reminder, here is the plan for this construction season:
Burton’s new multi-purpose/cafeteria addition will be attached to the building at the northeast corner of the playground by the gym. It will house a new lunchroom, a new kitchen, storage rooms, restrooms and will be a wonderful space for collaboration.
Half of Burton’s playground (east side) and parking lot will be fenced off by mid-October to prepare for construction. The playground doors will remain open with the construction fence just to the east.
Construction fencing will also go up in the southeast section of the field inside the track, to prepare for a new, smaller playground area. The park entrance will still be accessible.
Due to the location of the addition, some Burton playground equipment (swings, monkey bars, tubes, shade sails) will move to inside the track permanently.
The street-side parking on Nadine plus the sidewalk will remain open through November/December.
Once the new playground area is completed in the field, the Nadine parking lot and sidewalk adjacent to the parking lot will be closed to the public through the end of August 2025. At that time, Burton families and students will use a gate near the field for drop off and pick up.
As construction dates get solidified, we will share them with the Burton and Huntington Woods community so everyone is prepared for the full construction season.
October Lunch Menu
Tuesdays = Dominos Pizza
On Tuesdays, Domino's Pizza will be among the five food choices students can select. All students ordering pizza will receive ONE free slice and a vegetable, fruit, and milk. If your child would like an additional slice of pizza (2 slices total), they must preorder it in the morning and have at least $2.00 in their student account. On Tuesday mornings, classroom teachers will ask students if they would like one slice or two. This is helpful so the lunch team is accurate on the total pizza slices to decrease food waste.
To add funds to your child's account, please access the Parent Portal.
BHS Halloween Pops Concert
You are invited to join us for our Halloween Pops Concert on Tuesday, October 29th at 7:00pm in the BHS Auditorium. Students and families can wear a costume to the fun event. Students in 5th-8th grade that attend the event will be entered into a drawing to win special candy bucket prize.
PTA
Trunk or Treat - Wednesday, October 30th from 6-7pm at HW City Hall!
Hello Burton Blue Jay Families!
The PTA is excited to announce that the 2nd Annual Burton Trunk or Treat is right around the corner. Given the impending construction coming our way, we are unable to plan to have the event in the Burton parking lot this year. The Huntington Woods City Hall has graciously given us use of their parking lot, and we are excited to collaborate with them for this fun event! Come to share in trunk or treating with our Burton community, and then head inside city hall since they will be staying open late to pass out candy and give the kiddos a chance to vote on their favorite trunk decoration! They will also be available to receive absentee ballots, issue absentee ballots, register people to vote, and answer any questions you might have. Please be sure to park on the side streets and walk up to the event. There will be no space for people attending the event, who have not signed up with a decorated trunk, to park in the parking lot.
We are also looking for families interested in decorating their trunks and passing out candy! Please note that each family with a decorated trunk is responsible for providing their own candy. PTA will have some extra candy available if needed! Please sign up via the provided link for car decoration, if interested, but also if you plan to join in on the trunk or treating fun. Having a number of how many children planning on attending gives the families with decorated trunks an idea of how much candy to get!
