The Wilmot Word: August 30, 2024

I want to thank all of staff, students and families for their support this week with the excessive heat and the storm that resulted in school being closed. It was such a pleasure seeing all of our families this week during open house. Our partnership with parents and guardians helps us to create a positive school environment for our students. In my 30+ years as an educator this was my first ever open house "in the dark." I was very impressed by the flexibility of our teachers and families who continued with their open house presentations even when we lost power. Way to go!

Building students’ social-emotional learning (SEL) skills is important at Wilmot. As a part of the learning process, we will be asking students in grades K-8 to reflect on skills related to social-emotional learning and the school environment. The survey will be administered to all students in grades K-8 between September 5th and September 22nd and it should take no more than 20 minutes to complete. Per policy, if you would like your child to opt out of taking the survey, please contact me no later than Wednesday, September 4.

We have been reading the book, The Anxious Generation, by Jonathan Haidt, which explores the significant increase in anxiety among today's youth, examining the underlying causes and societal factors contributing to this trend. The book provides practical strategies and insights for parents/guardians, educators, and mental health professionals to help young people manage anxiety and build resilience.

We are planning a parent/guardian evening on Monday, September 23 from 6:30 - 7:30 pm, to bring our Wilmot families together to discuss some of the topics introduced in the book.

Please help us teach and model safe behavior for our students!

• Cars may enter the front lot off of Deerfield Rd. or the west lot off of Wilmot Rd. There is limited space for cars in the front lot to pull along the median. Please do not block the entrance or pull into the bus lane.
• Please be respectful of our staff who are assisting children and flagging cars to move forward.

• All drivers must pull all the way forward in both parking lots.

• Drivers should not get out of their cars along the curb to assist students in either lot. Our staff is happy to assist and open doors with child safety locks.
• Adults should NEVER enter the parking lot using the exit. This creates a very dangerous situation.

• Drives should NEVER use their phone when on or around school property.

• Drivers should NOT block the entrance in the front lot or park in the designated handicapped spaces (which includes the lines painted adjacent to the parking space).
• We ask that you only cross at the crosswalk.

• Physical Examination - Due by October 15, 2024.
• Immunizations - Due by October 15, 2024.
• Eye Exam -Due by October 15, 2024.
• Dental Exam -Due by May 15, 2025.

If you have more than one child, a form will need to be uploaded for each individual student. Please remember to upload all pages of the forms to meet the requirements. Hi Fabulous Wilmot Families! Our art room has a "Look Who's at the Art Museum" wall, which shows various current Wilmot students in front of famous works of art. So, if you are at any art museum this year, or were recently at an art museum, please send in, or email me to print, a photo of your Wilmot children standing in front of any famous work of art. Please see the sample of our wall thus far for this year. The kids always love looking at this wall throughout the year and love when new pics are added! Thanks so much!
