Principal's Corner
Hello Miles Mustangs!
Thanks for checking out this month's newsletter. So many wonderful things are happening at Miles and this newsletter is used to showcase them. Be sure to read until the end to be sure you are caught up and in the know!
From me, your proud principal, I want to highlight some important dates that are coming up and hope you can plan to join us. First, our first quarterly Site Council meeting is September 17th at 5pm via the 'milesmainzoomlink' shared in this newsletter. Site Council consists of staff and community members with the main purpose of monitoring and spending tax credit dollars. Here at Miles, we use our tax credit monies to fund the garden program as well as our ASL enrichment program for our elementary students. Without tax credit, these programs could not sustained. Please consider joining Site Council and being a voice for these programs as well as other things you'd like to see here at Miles. Please contact the Site Council Facilitator, Monica Granillo by email with questions.
Next, it is with a heavy hear that I share Miles will not host a Spooky Fall Night in October as we have for the past two years. It has been a favorite event of mine and one that I'm sure many would love to continue. I believe it will be back...just not this year. However, as a person who always looks for a chance to dress up and infuse some fun into our lives here at school, we would like to host our annual Walk-a-Thon event on October 30th and allow for costumes to be worn. I can already see blow-up dinosaurs running the track. Should be a good time and a way for us to raise funds for Miles. Stay tuned for more details on this event and how you can support.
Finally, Miles will once again recognize Ruby Bridges Day. This year, Ruby Bridges Day is on November 14th. This is a whole school event where we enter the building as one unit and also spend time learning about the history of Ruby Bridges and how her efforts as a young girl shaped the educational environment into a more inclusive space for all students. Gather up your most purple-y outift and get ready to say, "Thank you Ruby Bridges!"
Enjoy,
Principal Andrea Steele

Counselor's Corner
In the month of September, we are talking about Responsibility. One way to define Responsibility is “taking action and understanding the impact of our choices.” Taking action can mean doing the right thing or completing the tasks you have been assigned. Understanding the impact of our choices means that our actions matter. Positive and responsible actions can help people, and irresponsible actions can hurt others. Responsibility is one of many traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students throughout the school. Students will be developing skills like focusing, organizing, and goal setting. We have many new activities that Miles students are participating in this year: volleyball, basketball, cross country, drama club, music and many more.
As students navigate these fun but challenging tasks, here are some questions you can ask:
Can you describe the difference between being Responsible and irresponsible?
What does it mean to you to be engaged in school?
Share how you have practiced being engaged in your student’s school, your community, or perhaps your work.
From the Health Office:
The Health Office is always accepting donations of gently used shirts, shorts and pants in sizes 5-10. Thank you in advance for your donations!
