Counselor's Corner
As the frantic energy of returning to school ebbs, you will likely start to notice that even your most emotionally-egulated student falls apart shortly after returning home or close to bedtime. Your student may come home angry, may yell, or have a full meltdown. "Some kids become weepy, while others scream, throw things and become generally unreasonable. Older kids might act rude and disrespectful, hurling insults at you and their siblings. If this sounds familiar, it’s because it’s a real phenomenon." (Seto 2020)
There’s even a name for it: After-School Restraint Collapse.
How to handle it: Take a deep breath and recognize it for what it is. Remember that these are not temper tantrums or a child trying to get their way or test boundaries. "The after-school restraint collapse is exactly that—a collapse, or meltdown, because your child is so emotionally overwhelmed that they can no longer keep it together." (Seto 2020) This occurs only after your student has returned home to their safe space. Allow for the meltdown and find a way for your student to decompress at the end of the day with activities like riding a bike, listening to music, walking the dog, etc. I've even asked some families to schedule a 30-minute vacation for their child upon returning home where the child can retreat to their room and know they won't have to talk to anyone until the 30 minutes is up if the meltdown continues past the first week or two of school.
Making daily decompression a family activity is a great way to model healthy living and coping.
Best of luck to all the falcon families this year. We love seeing your students everyday!
MS Clubs will be starting soon!
Things to rememember about clubs:
- You can join anytime whether you signed up or not.
- You don't have to go to every meeting (sometimes schedules don't permit it).
