Reading Class Smore

Reading Class
In Reading class, we have been focusing on comparing and contrasting nonfiction paired texts.
One nonfiction text we used to practice comparing and contrasting is Are These The Coolest Schools in America: Quest School in NYC vs. Zoo School in Grand Rapids.
When comparing and contrasting, students learn to identify specific words and phrases in a text in order to analyze similarities and differences.
We also learned new comparison vocabulary words and how to correctly use them in our speaking and writing.
Foundational Reading Class
In Foundational Reading, we have been working on improving students’ phonics skills by teaching the UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) Foundations program. This program is “an explicit and systematic program that teaches students the foundational skills necessary for proficient reading.”
Based on their performance on the Quick Phonics Screener (QPS), students have been working at their instructional level and practicing the phonics skills they need to become strong readers.
We have also been incorporating authentic reading into our instruction so the students can apply these newly learned phonics skills.
