Reading Class Smore
Ms. Braese, Ms. Sullivan, and Ms. Sun
Reading Class
In Reading class, we have been reviewing nonfiction text features and their purpose. We have been reading a variety of nonfiction passages, identifying text features that are included (headings, captions, maps, timelines, graphs, etc.), and analyzing why an author may have included information in this format.
Moving forward, we will be learning more about author’s purpose and motivation to write a text. We will be analyzing word choice in order to identify different types of writing (informational, persuasive, entertainment, etc.) and describing why an author may have made certain decisions when writing.
Foundational Reading Class
In Foundational Reading, we have been working on improving students’ phonics skills by teaching the UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) Foundations program. This program is “an explicit and systematic program that teaches students the foundational skills necessary for proficient reading.”
Based on their performance on the Quick Phonics Screener (QPS), students have been working at their instructional level and practicing the phonics skills they need to become strong readers.
We have also been incorporating authentic reading into our instruction so the students can apply these newly learned phonics skills.
