Buckalew Buzz- SUMMER & 2020-21
A Communication Tool for Our Buckalew Family and Community
Summer and 20-21 School Year Information
Thank YOU PARENTS!
The faculty and staff at Buckalew would like to extend a HUGE thank-you to all our amazing volunteers who have helped in so many different ways this school year. At the helm, we had a group of outstanding ladies serving on our 2019-2020 Buckalew PTO Executive Board.
We are so blessed that during this COVID-19 journey, we have the amazing parent community that we do! We couldn't have done this last 10 weeks without all parents taking the time, adjusting routines, facilitating and supporting this remote learning experience. Everything YOU ALL do enables us to have the BEST environment for our children.
We are blessed beyond measure to have such a generous and willing parent community working alongside us to make Buckalew the BEst it can BE!
A Message from our PTO
We started this year with our school theme “You Can BE Anything”. By all means anything did happen and our community chooses to BE supportive and encouraging through every new development.
BE Kind. PTO offered family support by hosting the first day of school Boohoo Yahoo Breakfast for kindergarten and new families to Buckalew. We extended this support with the Big Bear Little Bear program partnering new families with veteran families who will help them throughout the school year.
BE Fun. This wonderful community has created family fun around our Field Day, Spirit Nights, Chalk the Walk and Walk to School Day. Every grade level teacher hosted an after school playdate giving extra time for students to be with friends while dancing, crafting, playing games and more. Also, the Garden Club educated 4th graders about the importance of nature and growing plants. The most fun was introducing Buddy the Bear this year and the kids went crazy giving him high fives and hugs!
BE Giving. We have created service minded students with a successful Community Outreach program with our yearly coat drive, food drive, toy drive, and book drive. We also provided monthly luncheons for the teachers and staff and for teacher appreciation week, we placed Buckalew Hero signs in teachers’ yards and left a gift bag of thanks.
BE Supportive. The PTO volunteers provided help in many other parts of the school. We decorated the school entry ways and maintained the landscaping to bring beauty to our campus. We gave many hours into the library and book fairs. Lost items were reunited through our efforts. Communication was updated through Room Moms, Buckalew Buzz, school marquee, Facebook, Instagram and the PTO website. We reached out to our Community Partners and reward programs (Box Tops, Krogers, AmazonSmile, ExxonMobil grant) to generate additional funds. We coordinated school supplies, Field Day, choir activities, art, and vision and hearing testing weeks. We captured the many school events through photos and produced the yearbook. We also elevated our school spirit by designing several school shirts for all the students to wear with pride.
BE Grateful. Your support was overwhelmingly generous during our annual Boosterthon, earning approximately $43,000. During this major school fundraiser, we were fortunate to also teach our children about valuable character traits of honesty, gratitude, generosity, humility, and kindness.
BE Endlessly Thankful. After a year of planning, our annual Buckalew Bash was cancelled and the carnival team transitioned to an online auction that offered a huge variety for everyone. Room moms worked so hard to create beautiful class baskets and our local businesses donated incredible services and goods. In the midst of a global crisis, our community gave back to Buckalew by raising approximately $17,400. We are so thankful for you and your support.
BE Helpful. The PTO serves to help Buckalew become the best school for all students. This year, funds were used to purchase the Positivity Project Program, a campus wide counseling program. Technology has proven to be vital to education and several programs, Dreambox, Brain Pop, and Razz Kids, were purchased. The school updated with a security scanner for the reception area and two way SL 300 radios. We supported enrichment events such as 1st grade Reading Restaurant, 3rd grade field trip to Creighton Theater Charlotte’s Web, and 4th grade author visit with Carolyn Burnett. We supported staff development with High Reliability Training and Autism and Social Communication Training. To maintain our classrooms the school provided classroom stacking bins, guided and differentiated math materials, and classroom flexible seating (wobble chairs, scoop rockers, wiggle stools, floor cushions). New elements such as indoor sensory path and kindergarten rugs will be added as well.
BE of Service. Next year holds new successes for the school and leading the 2020-21 year will be with the newly elected PTO Executive Board. Thank you for volunteering and helping our students and school!

The purpose of the PTO is to: (a) promote the welfare of children at Buckalew; (b) to foster cooperation between parents and teachers in the education of children at Buckalew; (c) to unite school and community efforts in securing for all children the best education; (d) to engage in fundraising activities for the educational and recreational benefit of Buckalew, its children, teachers, and staff as determined by the PTO and in accordance with the PTO by-laws. We succeeded in these goals together with our beautiful and collaborative community of school, families, volunteers, and children. Your dedication carries our efforts into next year with great gratitude. Thank you so much! #bettertogether
