Spartan Spotlight
April 2025
Hello Spartan Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you and your family enjoying (hopefully) the LAST weeks of winter.
We are officially in the home stretch of the 2024-25 school year! We entered into the LAST nine weeks of school on March 31st, which means the next couple of months are going to be busy with spring activities and end of year festivities.
Just some things to keep on your radar as we approach the end of the year:
- Detention Hours: Students need to serve all detention hours PRIOR to buying Prom Tickets and/or if they are a 12th grader and planning to walk across the stage at graduation. If they do not, they will not be able to attend Prom or walk across the stage at graduation. Please have your student check their detention hours on their PowerSchool. Detention can be served on Tuesdays and Thursdays during period 8 or from 3:55-4:40 pm or students can reach out to their Assistant Principal to make a plan to serve hours towards detention.
- Class Registration (for next year): All current 9th-11th graders have all registered for classes for the 25-26 school year. Students can check and show families their class registrations on PowerSchool. If you or your student have questions about post-secondary planning, their course selections or if your student would like to make any changes to those registrations, please reach out to their counselor prior to the end of this school year.
- Choice Ready Dashboard: Choice Ready is a state initiative that aims to prepare all North Dakota students with the necessary skills to be successful in life after high school. Students can check their Choice Ready Dashboard progress on PowerSchool at any time by clicking on the “Choice Ready” icon on the left-hand side of their PowerSchool screen. This dashboard includes information about your student’s progress on the essential skills as well as in the three post-secondary graduation pathways- Post Secondary Education, Military or Career Ready. You and your student can view the skill areas that your student has fulfilled/not fulfilled yet according to the Choice Ready framework. If you would like to learn more about Choice Ready, including how students can qualify for the North Dakota Scholarship (which is worth $6,000) feel free to check out this link: NDDPI Link to Choice Ready
- Semester 2 Grades: The last day of classes is Thursday, June 5, 2025. Students should be continuing to check their grades on PowerSchool often to ensure that they are on track to pass their classes and earn credits towards graduation. PowerSchool’s main page will now show projected grades for courses using Evidence Based Reporting as well as grades for courses using traditional points-based grading. If you have questions about any class, please contact that specific teacher for more information.
As always, if you have any questions about any of the above topics, feel free to reach out to your student’s assistant principal or school counselor (see below for contact information).

Acalympic Championship
Horace put up a great fight and had the lead for much of the second half, but the Smartans stayed composed, played their game, and eventually pulled away in the end, winning 15-10 to complete the back-to-back-to-back state titles and our 4th overall title in the 9 years the program has existed. Advisor Colin Kloster said "I’m so proud of this crew and all they’ve accomplished, and I’ll be sad to see the seniors leave, but we have some outstanding young players ready to have the torch passed to them and so I’m very optimistic about the future. As one rival coach once told Mr. Kloster “North doesn’t seem to ever rebuild, they simply reload”.
Congratulations to the Acalympic Team!
Starters are: Eleanor Iversen, Cayla Walker, Signe Nagle, Daniel Ciuperca, Noam Pearson and Chinmay Gopi. The alternates are: Patton Bania, Aerna Daueber, Alex Dirk, Luna Gasevic, Emily Gates, and Kenedy Nelson.
Boys Basketball
The 10-14 Spartan Boys Basketball team made a fifth consecutive appearance at the North Dakota State Class AA Basketball Tournament after playing their best basketball in late February-early March. They were able to play all three days of the tournament, competing for the Consolation Championship on Saturday. The Demons were just hot from the three-point line in the second half beating a determined Spartan team 110-99. The game set state records for most points in a game by both teams. Congratulations to Eric DeBoer and Matthew Sem for being chosen to the All-State Tournament Team. A great recognition for the boys and their abilities in the sport of basketball. Coach Hoeg had this to say, "I'm going to really miss the nine seniors on this squad, but excited for the future of the program as it's been led by amazing seniors each year since I've taken the reins of the program".
4 straight appearances to the state tournament.

Tardy Free Week
Tardy Free Week will be March 31st – April 4th. During this week, the classroom doors will close when the bell rings to begin class. Students who have not arrived to class by that time will not be allowed to attend that class that day. Instead, these students will spend that period with our In School Success program in Room #114 where they will have the opportunity to work on schoolwork for the remainder of the period before returning to their normal schedule. If students have a pass from the attendance office because they are just getting to school from an appointment, they were meeting with their school counselor, etc they will be able to still attend their class that period. Teachers will also be restricting passes out of the classroom during the first 10 minutes of each class period. We have seen a large increase in the number of Tardies and In School Truants over the past few years. We need to help create more positive attendance habits. Cutting down on the number of students entering the classroom at random times throughout the period helps make the class more productive for the students who are in the class as there are much fewer interruptions. Our first Tardy Free Week had positive impacts and we want to continue our growth in these areas.
FAQs:
Q: If a student is tardy for a class period do they still have the opportunity to attend their other classes later that day?
A: Yes, if a student is tardy for a class period they would only be in Room #114 for that period. After that they would return to their normal schedule.
Q: What if my student has an appointment that keeps them from attending their class at the beginning of the period?
A: Students would be able to still attend their class as normal as long as they obtain an excused pass from the attendance office.
Q: What if my student has unique needs that necessitate them having extra time between classes or necessitate them to utilize the restroom during the first 10 minutes of the class period?
A: If students have unique circumstances, they or their parent/guardian are encouraged to connect with their Principal and/or School Counselor so that we can communicate out to that student’s team.

Our upcoming Proficiency Day on June 5 provides students with a dedicated opportunity to demonstrate their learning through missing or additional assessments. Here’s what you need to know:
- The threshold for mandatory attendance remains unchanged for these days. More details can be found in this Google Slide Deck.
- Students who are required to attend—or who voluntarily choose to attend—will have one 45-minute period per class to complete missing assessments, retake assessments, or complete additional assessments to provide the teacher with a clear body of evidence.
- Students will not be able to work beyond that scheduled period on assessments for the same class.
- To maximize success, students are strongly encouraged to use retake opportunities throughout the semester and Spartan Period for relearning prior to Proficiency Day.
We appreciate your support in reinforcing the importance of preparing ahead of time so students can make the most of these assessment opportunities.

Counseling Office
Four Year Academic Plans
Parents/guardians and students can request to meet with a school counselor annually to review, discuss, and revise four-year academic plans for graduation. Families can call the North High counseling office, 446-2412, for an appointment, or students can come to the counseling office to set up a time. FPS school counselors visit classrooms several times during grades 8-12, to develop and revise academic plans. Each year at FNH, students update their 4-year plan during course registration.
The first visit occurs during the spring of 8th grade, when all students create their first high school four-year academic plan in PowerSchool. After that, students are encouraged to maintain and update the data in their plans.
During registration class visits, students in grades 9-11 are given the resources to count credits, rework their academic plans and establish course work for the following year. During this class visit, students meet individually with their counselors.
One final credit count and review of the academic plan is completed in the fall of 12th grade.
Whenever a student or parent/guardian initiates an inquiry about credits earned, graduation status, or course selection, counselors are eager to discuss academic planning options.
Plan
This spring we have started a new Lunch & Learn Series called PLAN - Prepare for Life After North. This is an opportunity for students to learn about different topics to help them plan for their future. Students are welcome to attend any sessions that are of interest to them.
Each session will be offered during all three lunches and will consist of a 15-minute presentation/Q&A. Start times for the presentations: Lunch 1 – 11:25am, Lunch 2 – 12:15pm, or Lunch 3 – 1:05pm. All PLAN sessions will be in Room 102. Grab your lunch and bring it with you or come during your open period. No need to sign up. All students are welcome to attend.
