2nd Grade Goals
"Be kind and help each other learn every day!"
As the calendar turns to a new year, the second-grade classes at Emerson have been busy setting goals to make 2025 their best year yet! Guided by their teachers, the students participated in a fun and reflective activity where they brainstormed ideas, shared aspirations, and chose a class goal to work toward together. With enthusiasm and teamwork, they landed on a meaningful and exciting goal: "Be kind and help each other learn every day!" To keep the goal alive throughout the year, the class has created a "Goal Tracker" wall in their classroom. Every time a student helps a classmate or demonstrates being kind or helping each other learn and grow, they add their name to the wall.
The students have also created individual academic goals that will help them learn how to focus and work toward something meaningful. The teachers have planned monthly check-ins where students can reflect on their progress and celebrate their successes.
Let’s cheer on our second-grade superstars as they work toward their New Year’s goal! Here’s to a year full of learning, kindness, and growth.
Kindergarten and 6th Grade Buddies
The Kindergarten students love Friday afternoons and the time that they get to spend with their 6th Grade Reading Buddies. The students work on letters, sounds, red words, and emergent readers. The 6th Graders read to the Kindergarten students, as well. We look forward to this every week!

Emerson Welcomes Two New Staff Members
Welcome, Mr. Winkler and Ms. Duncan!
Winkler & Duncan Join On
Emerson welcomed two new staff members last week with the addition of teacher Nick Winkler and parapro Alison Duncan.
Nick Winkler
Mr. Winkler will spend most of his day at Emerson working in the resource room before assuming late afternoon duties at Fraser High School. Among those duties is beginning a new era of Fraser football as Winkler steps in as the new head varsity football coach.
Mr. Winkler is a 2012 graduate of Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU). He has an interesting path to Emerson. After graduation, he began his teaching career in Alaska from 2012-17. While he loved the teaching, five years of paying $6 for a gallon of milk and looking over his shoulder for loose moose & bear glares, Mr. Winkler sought a change. He moved to New Mexico teaching in Gallup for three years until the call of the cold beckoned him once again. Mr. Winkler moved to Green Bay, WI where, as a youth, he donned a cheesehead hat and sat on his grandfather’s knee listening to tales of Packer lore. After Green Bay it was on to Cadillac, MI. He resigned that job just after Christmas to accept his position in Fraser.
When asked what influences turned him to a career in teaching & coaching, Winkler immediately pointed to a great teacher he had at SVSU. This man demonstrated a unique balance between teaching content and teaching students. “My teacher showed that these are two different skills, equally important.”
Emerson and the Fraser District welcome Mr. Winkler and wish him well.
Alison Duncan
Ms. Duncan joins the Emerson staff as a parapro focused on the resource room. She is a Florida native who joined the US Marines right out of high school. Ms. Duncan served two tours in her 8 years as a Marine. In her first tour she played in the Marine Band. Her second tour saw her serving in Afghanistan working with geo-spatial intelligence, (map making).
After leaving the Marines in 2012, Ms. Duncan enrolled in Cal State San Marcus where she earned her degree and teaching credentials. In 2017, she left California to move to Michigan where her husband took a job with Rocket Mortgage. The company was expanding quickly and in need of someone to train new employees. When Rocket learned of Ms. Duncan’s teaching credential, it hired her.
As business cycles go, Rocket went into a downsizing mode which freed Ms. Duncan to join the Emerson staff. It is our good fortune to have her.
Recess Safety: Dressing for Cold Weather
Even when the temperature feels like 11°F, recess is an important part of your child’s day. Fresh air and physical activity benefit their health, mood, and ability to focus in class. Our 6th-grade students love going outside for recess, even when the temperatures drop! It’s their chance to stretch, move around, and enjoy the fresh air.
Here are some tips to help your child enjoy recess, even in the cold:
- Use a Warm Coat: Choose a winter coat designed for cold weather, ideally with a hood for extra warmth
- Wear Proper Accessories: A warm hat, gloves or mittens, and a scarf are essential to protect exposed skin.
- Protect Feet: Boots will keep feet warm and dry. No Crocs please!
Cold weather doesn’t stop the fun, but staying warm and safe is key!
District policy is recess will be outside in windchill temps at 11 degrees and above unless there is extremely wet or icy precipitation.

CANVAS LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM!
All students, grades Young 5s-12 use Canvas, a learning management system. Classroom teachers use Canvas to provide instruction, resources, activities, and assessments for students, as well as parent communication.
Parents are encouraged to set up a parent/observer account to stay abreast of student learning. Canvas will allow parents to:
- Contact their child’s teacher
- View grades, due dates, and events
- See, and in many cases access, what the child is doing at school
- Support an absent student
- View classroom and building announcements
