Carver Family Newsletter
November 9, 2021
From the Principal's Office
PLEASE SHARE THIS NEWSLETTER WITH 5 CARVER FAMILIES!! THERE IS A LOT OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION IN HERE!!
-Scholars must bring a mask/face covering to school. We can provide a replacement if their's breaks or gets dirty, but we do not have enough PPE to provide students with a new mask daily.
-Remember to bring a jacket or coat with a hood. Write your scholar's name on the inside of their jacket, as many items look the same.
-Scholars may wear a long sleeve shirt under their school shirt.
-An extra pair of socks is always helpful. Sometimes our scholars like to jump in puddles on the way to or from recess. No one wants to wear wet socks all day!
-On rainy mornings, scholars will be invited to sit in the main foyer until classes open. Our building opens as early as 8AM on rainy days. There are no staff available to supervise students before this time.
-During rainy days, recess is indoors. Students have indoor activities to choose from while they stay warm and dry indoors.
Thank you and please contact our office if we can be of any support to you and your family (415-330-1540).
Warmly,
Principal Manning
No School Thursday, November 11, 2021
School will resume on Friday, November 12, 2021.
Late Mornings and Early Afternoons
One way to do that is to ensure that your child is on time to school every day. Breakfast begins at 8:30 am. Students are considered late at 8:41 am.
School ends at 2:55 daily. Please schedule appointments after the school day ends. Early pickups are disruptive to the classroom and learning environment, and your child misses valuable time on task with their educator.
A 10 minute late arrival and early departure equals an 1 hour and 40 minutes of learning loss per week. This is equal to 6 hours per month, or 1 full instructional day!!
Please help us ensure that our scholars receive all the time they deserve leading and learning.
Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences
Conferences will be held the week of November 15-19, 2021. Students will be released from school at 1:40 PM every day during that week.
If you have not signed up for a conference time, please contact Mrs. White immediately to secure a time slot. (whitec1@sfusd.edu)
How-To Parent-Teacher-Student Conference
-Determine if your conference is in-person or on zoom. Confirm at least 24 hours in advance.
-Be on time. Arrive 5 minutes early if the conference is in person. Log on to the zoom call at leas 5 minutes early to avoid connectivity issues.
-Listen actively. Please do not multitask by answering other calls, texts, or other distractions during your conference. This is an important business meeting to discuss your greatest asset: your scholar!
-Ask questions. Here are a few examples:
*What are my child's strengths?
*Where does my child need further support?
*How many absences does my child have? How many tardies?
*How can I further support my child at home?
Learning Contracts
During the month of October, we captured baseline data on all of our students reading skills. Now, we would like to share that information with you during the Parent-Teacher-Student conference.
The contract will allow you to see where your child currently stands in literacy. This is how we measure reading per grade level:
-Kindergarten uses a tool called the KRI (Kindergarten Readiness Inventory). Ms. Albright will b able to share this information with you.
-1st and 2nd grades uses a tool called F&P (Fountas and Pinnell). When children read to their teacher, the teacher is able to capture an accurate reading level for each child. Each level (A-Z) has specific skills attached to it. In order for your child to grow to the next level, they have to practice and become good at those skills. Ms. Paci and Ms. Comendador will be able to share what reading level your child is currently on, and what skills it will take for him or her to move forward.
-3rd through 5th grades use a tool called RI (Reading Inventory). This tool assigns students a lexile level. This level describes reading skills, also. This lexile level also allows us to predict how students might perform on the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) which student will take in March of 2022. Your child's teacher will share your child's current lexile score as well as their goal for the end of the year.
The contract will be your agreement with the classroom teacher about how we will work together to support your child's literacy growth and development for this school year.
