Mustang News - April 12, 2024
From The Principal
We are so proud to celebrate our Student Council for earning the qualification as a National Gold Council of Excellence for the eleventh year in a row! Their passion, leadership, and community-minded work creates incredible opportunities for us to grow as a community!
Also, please join us in congratulating our nominees for the Manni Awards: Sierra D. and Cody K. and our winners: Kate J. and Mr. Talbott! Each of them truly epitomizes what it means to be a Mustang.
Thank you to our students, staff, and community for your partnership in ACT WorkKeys and CMAS Science this Tuesday. We appreciate everyone’s determination!
Additionally, it has been so fun to see students working on such engaging materials this week, ranging from analyzing mythological Americans to making clay whistles to creating presentations for their peers around genetic diseases. We are excited to finish the school year strong across all of our classrooms, activities, and athletics!
Next week, we are looking forward to the Food Drive Week planned by Key Club, including spirit days, a kickball tournament, an MSHS staff vs CSCS staff basketball game, and more! We also hope you will join us in attending STEAM Night on Thursday, 4/18 from 5:30-7 pm at MSMS as well as the spring play on Friday and Saturday at the District Auditorium! Furthermore, we have testing again on Wednesday (no classes) with PSAT 9, PSAT 10, and SAT.
I hope you have a lovely weekend!

A Word From The Biology Department
AP Bio just completed a pretty cool, highly technical lab with success. Students successfully transformed E. coli bacteria with a gene from a jellyfish. This transformation allowed the E. coli bacteria to express the GFP (green fluorescent protein) gene and subsequently floresce (glow) under UV light. The technical skill in this lab is quite high as students had to streak and grow E. coli using a dilution streak method to isolate individual colonies, transform the bacteria with a plasmid that contained 3 important genes; a gene for ampicillin resistance, GFP and arabinose metabolism as well as a selection method involving the antibiotic ampicillin. To coax the bacteria into taking up the plasmid, very specific protocol had to be followed involving heat shock and CaCl salt. The moment of truth occurred when we regrew the bacteria on a plate with both ampicillin and arabinose sugar. If we got glowing, we knew the transformation was a success. All groups got glowing!
Proud of these kids!
