Congratulations, Ryker Yun!
On January 16, Ryker Yun, fifth grader in Mr. Traller's class, was sworn into the Oregon Kid Governor Cabinet in a ceremony at the state capitol. During the ceremony, Ryker shared his three point plan to support families in need, and he will work to implement his plan this year. We are proud of you, Ryker!
Kids Heart Challenge is Coming to Bonny Slope!
Dear Families,
Kids Heart Challenge will be coming to our school in January, and we are proud to support the American Heart Association through this service-learning program. Students will learn how to have happy and healthy hearts and brains, while learning to help others with special hearts. Plus, your family can learn the lifesaving skill of Hands-Only CPR through Finn’s Mission! Sign Up Early www.heart.org/schools or by downloading the FREE AHA Schools App for Apple or Android.
Students who sign up early will be recognized at our assembly on 1/31/2025!
Meet heart survivor Finn and hear how completing Finn’s Mission gives hope to everyone, everywhere. Let’s save lives together! Thank you for being a Heart Hero!
STUDENT SUCCESS CORNER
Currently we’re continuing with our Kindness in the Classroom concept of Inclusiveness. Inclusiveness is about creating a sense of belonging and showing kindness by welcoming others into our circles. It involves recognizing and valuing the unique qualities and perspectives of each individual. By fostering inclusiveness, we can build stronger, more compassionate communities where everyone feels respected and valued.
What Does Inclusiveness Mean?
Being inclusive means:
Welcoming others into activities, conversations, or spaces, regardless of their differences.
Listening to and appreciating different perspectives and ideas.
Offering kindness and support to those who might feel left out or overlooked.
Recognizing that everyone has something valuable to contribute.
Inclusiveness isn’t just about tolerating differences—it’s about embracing them and making an intentional effort to include others in meaningful ways.
How You Can Encourage Inclusiveness at Home
Here are some ways you can support the concept of inclusiveness with your child:
Talk about what inclusiveness looks like. Share examples from your own experiences or stories where people worked together despite differences.
Model inclusive behavior. Show kindness and acceptance toward others, even when they may seem different from you.
Encourage curiosity. Help your child learn about different cultures, abilities, and perspectives, and celebrate the diversity in your community.
Encourage empathy and understanding. Ask your child how they think others might feel in certain situations, such as being the new person in a group or not speaking the same language.
Teach problem-solving skills. Help your child brainstorm ways to handle situations where someone is being excluded. For example, “If you see a group not letting someone join in, what can you do?”
Questions to Ask Your Child
To help your child reflect on ways they are practicing inclusiveness, try asking open-ended questions like:
At School:
“Did you see someone who was sitting or playing alone today? What did you do?”
“Who did you work with during group time? How did you make sure everyone felt included?”
At Home:
“How can we work together as a family to make sure everyone feels heard and valued?”
“Have you noticed when someone in the family might feel left out? What could we do to include them more?”
In the Neighborhood or Community:
“Have you noticed a new neighbor or someone who might feel out of place? How could we make them feel welcome?”
“When you’re playing with friends outside, how do you make sure everyone gets to join in?”
The Impact of Inclusiveness
When children learn to practice inclusiveness, they grow into empathetic, compassionate individuals who can build strong, positive relationships with others. By supporting this concept at home and in the community, you’re helping your child develop valuable life skills and make a lasting impact on those around them.
Thank you for your support as we work together to help our students learn the importance of kindness and inclusiveness!

Session 2: Self-guided tour - meet content teams in classrooms followed by 7:15 presentation
This event will include a presentation about what to expect in 6th - 8th grades at Tumwater Middle School, including core academic classes, electives, and co-curricular activities. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions as you take a self-guided tour - meeting staff members on each content team. Please keep in mind; this evening is designed for parents, not children. Our parking is limited so please consider carpooling, walking, or biking to this event.
5th Grade Fly-Ups - February 26th & 27th
Tumwater will host 5th grade fly-ups during the school day on Wednesday, February 26th (Oaks Hills, Terra Linda, Cedar Mill & Private/Home-School) AND Thursday, February 27th (Findley, Bonny Slope & Private School). Students will attend this event with teachers and students from their elementary school. Bus transportation to and from Tumwater is provided. Students will learn all about Tumwater and what it has to offer as they tour the school with our 8th grade Web Leaders! Following their visit, parents/guardians will receive a ParentSquare message from Tumwater Middle School with a link to a course request form. We ask that parents support their children in filling out these forms online by Monday, March 3rd.
We invite families to visit the Tumwater Middle School Website for more information about events at Tumwater Middle School. In addition, please follow us on social media - Instagram and Facebook.
We also encourage our families to follow our Tumwater PTO on Instagram and Facebook. You can learn more about the Parent Teacher Organization by visiting their website. You can learn more about TEMPO, our parent group that supports band and choir by visiting their website.
2024 Tax Exemption for Parents of Children with Disabilities
The Oregon Tax Code provides an additional tax exemption for parents of eligible children with disabilities in Oregon. The procedure for claiming an exemption for the 2024 tax year is explained in the Oregon Individual Income Tax Return and Instruction booklets.
Who qualifies for the exemption?
A child qualifies if they meet all of the following criteria:
- Qualifies as a dependent of the parent(s) for tax year 2024;
- Is eligible for early intervention services (birth to age 3), early childhood special education services (ages 3 to 5) or receives special education as defined by the State Board of Education of the state where the child attends school; and,
- Is considered to have a disability as of December 31, 2024 under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and related Oregon laws.
What documentation must be submitted with the tax return to qualify for this exemption?
As the tax instruction booklet indicates, the child must have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP), as well as a current eligibility statement as a student with a disability. If you do not have these documents contact your District for a copy of the IEP/IFSP cover sheet, and eligibility statement. Copies of the IEP/IFSP cover sheet and eligibility statement are not required to be submitted with the tax return. However, parents are advised to retain a copy with their 2024 tax records as the Oregon Department of Revenue may ask the parents to provide such documentation. If you have any Special Education related questions, please contact your local education provider.
Oregon Department of Revenue Online Instructions and Forms
Oregon income tax forms/publications are available at the DOR website (www.oregon.gov/DOR). This process enables you to claim the additional tax exemption for the 2024 tax year.
