Summer Learning: Finding the Right Balance
We’re already two weeks into summer vacation! Many of our families are traveling, while others are busy creating structure and routine at home. The topic of summer assignments often sparks debate. Some see them as essential for retaining knowledge and preparing for the year ahead, while others value summer as a time for rest, exploration, and family connection.
Why Summer Work Matters:
Engaging in academic tasks over the summer helps prevent the “summer slide”—the loss of skills that can happen during extended breaks. Assignments in reading and math are designed to reinforce learning and support a smoother transition into the next grade. They also foster responsibility, time management, and perseverance, giving students a chance to practice these skills on a more relaxed schedule than during the school year. For some, summer work can also help close gaps in understanding from the previous year.
Acknowledging Concerns:
We recognize that summer should also be a time for rest, play, and personal growth. Time away from the classroom allows students to explore their interests, connect with family, and engage in meaningful activities like volunteering, traveling, or simply enjoying unstructured play.
Our Approach:
At St. Viator, we’ve aimed for balance. The summer assignments are meaningful but manageable, designed to keep students engaged without overwhelming them. Our goal is for students to enjoy reading great books, strengthen their math skills, and still have plenty of time to swim, play, and relax.
Thank you to our families for partnering with us in keeping students learning and growing—even in the sunshine of summer!

Welcome New School and Parish Music Minister
St. Viator Catholic School is proud to welcome Ms. Ledda Rosenberger to our teaching staff for the 2025–2026 school year as our new Music Teacher. Ms. Rosenberger brings a deep passion for both music and education, along with a strong academic foundation. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education (major in Flute, minor in Piano) and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting, with additional doctoral coursework toward a DMA. Her academic training, paired with years of experience in both liturgical and classroom settings, has equipped her to inspire students to discover their creative voices and develop a lifelong appreciation for music.
Ledda has led school choirs, coordinated performances, and skillfully integrated faith-based music instruction into a broader academic curriculum. She is experienced in teaching a variety of instruments and vocal techniques, and she emphasizes confidence-building, collaboration, and joy in every lesson.
As part of her vision for the music program at St. Viator, Ms. Rosenberger plans to introduce instrumental instruction in strings and brass for students in grades 4–8. She will also offer a music enrichment class designed specifically for students who already have experience playing an instrument, giving them the opportunity to further develop their skills. In addition, she hopes to continue beloved programs such as Cantor Club and Handbells, fostering student leadership in liturgical music and ensemble performance.
For Ms. Rosenberger, music is more than a subject—it is a reflection of worship, culture, and community. Whether preparing students for school Masses, seasonal concerts, or classroom exploration, she is committed to nurturing well-rounded learners who recognize the beauty and meaning of music.
Outside the classroom, Ledda will assume the role of liturgical minister at St. Viator Church and will regularly share her gifts through parish events and worship. We are thrilled to have her join the St. Viator community!
Welcome Mrs. Laura Manfredi as the 6th /7th grade ELA Teacher
St. Viator Catholic School is proud to welcome Mrs. Laura Manfredi to our teaching staff for the 2025–2026 school year as our new 6th/7th Grade English Language Arts Teacher & 6th Grade Homeroom Teacher. Laura Manfredi is thrilled to return to the classroom as the 6th and 7th Grade English Language Arts teacher and the 6th Grade Homeroom teacher at St. Viator Parish School. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Laura studied Theater Arts at Notre Dame de Namur University, where she also earned her teaching credential. It was there she met her husband, Mr. John Paul Manfredi—an SVS alumnus and current Theology teacher at Bishop Gorman High School.
Laura began her teaching career in Las Vegas, teaching 2nd grade at St. Francis de Sales before stepping away to raise her growing family. She and her husband are proud parents to three SVS students: Tony (5th grade), Maggie (3rd grade), and Frankie (Kindergarten). Laura is also the daughter-in-law of Mrs. Janet Manfredi, beloved 1A teacher at St. Viator.
In recent years, Laura served as a library assistant and most recently as Program Director at Engage Lifestyle Martial Arts in Henderson. Her background in theater, literacy, and leadership allows her to bring energy, creativity, and strong communication skills to her teaching.
Laura is passionate about literature, storytelling, and helping students grow as readers, writers, and critical thinkers. She is especially excited to be teaching in the same community where her children are growing in faith and learning.
Welcome Mr. Funtila to 5th grade
St. Viator Catholic School is proud to welcome Mr. Dennis Funtila to our teaching staff for the 2025–2026 school year as our new 5th grade teacher. Mr. Funtila is a longtime member of the Viatorian community—his family first joined nearly 13 years ago when his children were students in Mrs. Crame’s class. A retired U.S. Marine Corps Platoon Sergeant, Mr. Funtila brings a strong background in leadership, mentorship, and instruction. Throughout his military service, he gravitated toward teaching, whether training Marines in operational readiness or mentoring junior leaders. It became clear that education was his true calling.
After retiring from the Marines, Mr. Funtila earned his bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration from National University. Since then, he has taught in Catholic schools in both Colorado Springs and Las Vegas. He is deeply committed to Catholic education’s mission of forming the whole person—intellectually, spiritually, and morally—and is passionate about building community through faith and service.
Outside the classroom, Mr. Funtila is a devoted husband and father. His family loves the outdoors and spends time hiking, camping, traveling, and playing pickleball. He actively volunteers with organizations that support veterans, including Semper Fi & America’s Fund and the Catch a Lift Fund. His family also participates in parish life, especially through the teen youth group, where they remain engaged in service and fellowship.
Mr. Funtila believes in structure, mutual respect, and teaching with heart. He is committed to helping students discover their academic strengths and their God-given purpose. He is excited to grow with the St. Viator community and looks forward to a wonderful school year ahead.
You may spot him at church—or even at the gym—this summer!

Standards of Excellence School Vitality Survey
At any time, I am happy to speak on “you cannot judge a book based on its cover.” SVS has heart, has the most caring and dedicated staff (they are old school tough which I treasure but they absolutely LOVE our children), has community, has humble children that are taught to be kind. You really don’t understand the priceless value of this until you leave for a couple years and come back. I’m grateful for this perspective!
St. Viator welcomes a variety of students with behavioral and learning challenges that may not otherwise be given the opportunity to learn in a Catholic School. They are welcomed and supported in order to not affect the learning of others. The administration at St. Viator has an open door policy and listens to their teachers. They are always willing to hear new ideas.
Overall, I think our school does a very good job for the children. I understand that you can’t make us all happy but I know they try their best.
As we continue this process, we are hoping to hear from 75% of our families. Please complete the survey (linked below) Your participation is vital in helping us to analyze the school, its programs and impact on student learning.
We realize this WCEA survey is rather lengthy and should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. We are most grateful for your time and assisting us in this process!
