Let's Celebrate Black History Month!
February is Black History Month! This is a wonderful time dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the many important accomplishments of African American people from our past, present, and future. At Hixson, our staff will acknowledge and celebrate Black history in their work with students in a variety of ways including in their classes, Statesman Time, displays around the building and more! Check out the book display in the Library below!
National School Counselors Week, February 5-9, 2024
Next week is National School Counselors Appreciation week! We have four amazing counselors in the building who work tirelessly to meet the needs of our students. In addition to that, they are some of the nicest people in the world with the greatest jokes to boot! They have even embraced Dr. Mayes's obsession with zombies. Please take a moment next week to thank our counselors for all that they do. A quick email or note would go a long way.

School Resource Officer Appreciation Day, February 15
We all appreciate our School Resource Officer, Cameron McCullough! Take some time to send him a positive email or note as well! He is so good at building relationships with students and supporting our school with a variety of needs. Thank you O.C. for all you do!
Dismissal Reminders
We have been having some hiccups with dismissal procedures lately. Therefore, here are some reminders to ensure everyone is aware of how we run dismissal each day. This information was initially shared with all Hixson families in August via the Hixson Happenings.
- Please follow the directions of the administrators who are working dismissal.
- Please do not attempt to get in the bus lanes in the afternoon.
- During dismissal, parents/guardians should follow the car line making sure to close any gaps in front of you. We have more buses this year, so we do not have the space to maneuver cars around other cars that refuse to move up and follow the line. Please keep the line moving, and know that your student will find your car in line. Students exit the building on both sides of the building and find their cars from wherever they exit.
- The Elm lot is not two lanes in the afternoon. We have late buses almost every day, so we cannot have cars blocking the buses from picking up students when they arrive late. Please stay in the designated lane and move up when you are instructed to do so.
Please feel free to reach out to Hixson administration if you have any questions. Thank you for your cooperation.
Yearbooks are on Sale!

Math Placement for 24-25 School Year
Students in Math 6 and Math 7 will be assessed to determine course placement for next school year. Tests are administered during math class and take one class period to complete.
These end-of-year assessments will be administered on February 28. Sixth grade students are not expected to know Math 7 content and seventh grade students are not expected to know Math 8 content. The majority of students will continue on to the next level of math.
If you believe your child would not benefit from taking the end-of-year test for the next course and you prefer for your child to continue with their math program and be placed in the grade level math course next year, please contact your child’s math teacher prior to the scheduled testing date.
Sixth grade students currently enrolled in Math 7 with a grade of 75% or higher will be placed in Math 8 next year. Seventh grade students in Math 8 with a grade of 75% or higher will be placed in Algebra next year. Seventh grade students in Algebra 1 with a grade of 75% or higher will be placed in Honors Geometry next year.
More information regarding course placement may be found at the link below.
8th grade Trip to SLU Womens Basketball Game
Dear Hixson Parents/Guardians,
We are excited to inform you that 8th graders at Hixson Middle School have the opportunity to attend a SLU Women's Basketball game at Chaifetz Arena on February 7th. We believe this experience will not only be enjoyable but also educational for our students.
Students will need to bring $5 and a signed permission slip to their P.E. teacher by February 5th in order to attend. The permission slip is being handed out in class, but it is also provided below for your convenience.
*A complimentary lunch will be provided at the game and the concessions will be open but they do not accept cash.
Purpose of the Trip: The purpose of this field trip is to expose our students to a live sports event and foster a sense of camaraderie among the 8th-grade class. Watching the SLU Girls Basketball Game provides an opportunity for them to experience the excitement of women's collegiate sports while enjoying a day out of the classroom together.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Vinnie Raimondo, Jennifer Laue, Aaron Hummert and Brennan Wells
Volunteers and Donations Needed for 8th grade Party!

Transitioning the Class of 2031!
Save the Date: Hixson STEM + The Arts Academy! June 3-June 28, 2024
Save the Date for “Rising Together: Family Work for Racial Equity”
Join the WGSD PTO equity committees on Monday, Feb. 12, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Givens Elementary School Auditorium for “Rising Together: Family Work for Racial Equity.”
It’s been 10 years since Michael Brown was killed and the Ferguson Uprising inspired commitments to racial justice. Come hear where that work stands now, how high school students who came of age in a post-Ferguson world assess their landscape and the work that lies ahead, and how you can lead your family to ensure our community's children have the opportunity to rise together.
Childcare will be provided in the Givens cafeteria. If you plan to use childcare, please let us know in advance by filling out the form at bit.ly/RisingTogetherChildcare. Questions? Contact WGSDRisingTogether@gmail.com.
