A. MacArthur Barr Mission Statement
Preparing and inspiring students to apply learning in a changing, complex, and interdependent world.
Curriculum & Instruction
In 7th grade science, students conducted spooky chemistry labs where they liquefied "zombie brains", created "smokey ghosts" and altered the color of "witches blood" via chemical reactions.
Ms. McManus's students are breaking down the average chemical composition of Earth’s hydrosphere by element and percentage by volume. Students then worked together to fill out the data table and we worked on different methods of how to make a pie chart. At the end of the lesson, students were able to make their own pie chart with data on another one of Earth's spheres and see how all the spheres interact with each other.
Students in Mrs. Putnick's Social Studies class excavate chocolate chip cookies looking for artifacts. Throughout the lesson, students are sharing what is working for them as they excavate the site (cookie), separating the dirt (cookie crumbs) and extracting artifacts (chocolate chips) and categorizing them appropriately. Students come to the conclusion that being an archaeologist requires patience, the correct tools, is hard to remove residue from artifacts, and takes much effort and strategy.
In Ms. Haye's science class students focused on how to construct a scientific argument using the Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER) framework. Students engaged in hands-on activities to apply this method to a specific scientific phenomenon. Prior to completing the experiment in groups student's created a small and large airplane. They then identified which airplane they believed would fly the farthest. Ms. Hayes and students discussed how lift, thrust, gravity and drag are the 4 things that affect the distance the plane could fly. Students then went outside to test their hypothesis by flying their small and large airplanes and measuring the average distance they traveled in 3 trials. Throughout the trials Ms. Hayes stopped students to discuss what adjustments could they make to the procedure that would affect their throw. Lastly students used their data and determined if their claim was proven or not proven.

Extra Curriculars & Adventures at Barr
Our Fifth Grade Science team of teachers get ready to introduce the Space System Unit. Students will explore the phenomenon of day and night and how we see different constellations at different times of year. After several investigations in the classroom the students will have the opportunity to visit a planetarium to further their understanding of how we see different constellations as the Earth revolves around the sun.
Mr. Garrison's Video Production class created the following editions of the Nanuet News:
