Tap Into Maple Run Newsletter

Monday, October 28, 2024
As we enter the tenth week of the school year, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on our progress, share some updates, and address an important message shared with the Maple Run community last week.
Last week, I sent out a letter to all families and staff regarding the district’s response to threats in our schools. I want to reiterate that the safety and well-being of every student remains our highest priority. We understand the concern and anxiety these situations may cause, and I want to assure you that we follow strict protocols to ensure our students’ security. Our Threat Assessment Team, which includes trained professionals, administrators, and law enforcement, works diligently to assess risks and respond appropriately. We are committed to transparency and collaboration as we work together to keep our schools safe, and I encourage you to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Beyond this important topic, we also have much to celebrate! Fall playoffs are in full swing, bringing our community together to cheer on our student-athletes. It’s a joy to see our teams compete with determination, displaying the sportsmanship and pride that define Maple Run. Thank you to all the coaches, parents, and fans who support our athletes.
In other exciting news, our NCTC and BFA students have been engaging in valuable career exploration activities. Students recently toured local businesses and Global Foundries as part of Manufacturing Day, providing them with insights into future career paths. Additionally, the ASVAB test was administered at BFA, offering students the opportunity to explore their strengths and plan for future academic and occupational success.
Finally, events like Fairfield’s Harvest Night, which brought together families for a fun-filled evening of food and community, continue to remind us of the strength of our district. We are fortunate to be part of such a supportive, engaged community.
Thank you for your continued commitment to Maple Run, and let’s continue to build on this momentum as we move forward. Together, we are creating safe, vibrant learning environments where our students can thrive both academically and personally.

Nakuma Palczewski: Maple Run Unified School District Board Member
Spotlight on Nakuma Palczewski: Maple Run Unified School District Board Member and Community Advocate
This week, we are proud to highlight Nakuma Palczewski, a dedicated member of the Maple Run Unified School District Board of Directors, who brings a wealth of experience and resilience to our community. Nakuma’s journey is an inspiring story of determination and commitment, from her early years growing up in rural Texas to her life now in Vermont as a mother, professional, and Maple Run advocate.
Raised by a single mother in Texas, Nakuma learned early on about the importance of hard work and perseverance. Her journey continued in rural Maine, where she further developed her commitment to family and community values. Today, Nakuma is a devoted mother of two young boys, ages 4 and 10, whom she homeschools, all while managing a full-time career. This experience gives her a unique perspective on the challenges faced by Maple Run families, and she strives to bring this insight to her role on the school board.
As a board member, Nakuma’s approach is thoughtful and grounded in her understanding of the balance many families must achieve between work, school, and home life. She advocates for inclusive policies and accessible communication, aiming to support all Maple Run families in meaningful ways.
Nakuma recently joined our Tap Into Maple Run podcast to discuss her experiences and dedication to the Maple Run community. In this episode, she also shares her perspective on the importance of finding balance in our technology-driven lives, offering a “Technology Detox” tip to encourage unplugging for improved well-being.
We are grateful to Nakuma for her hard work, valuable perspectives, and commitment to making Maple Run a supportive environment for all. Listen to her full interview on Tap Into Maple Run, Episode 8, and be inspired by her story.
Wellness Tip of the Week: The Power of Gratitude
Wellness Tip of the Week: Digital Detox for Improved Well-being
In today’s digital age, taking intentional breaks from screens—known as a Digital Detox—can greatly benefit our mental and physical health. This week’s tip from Tap Into Maple Run Episode 8 highlights the importance of unplugging, along with easy ways to integrate screen-free moments into our daily lives.
Why It’s Important
Excessive screen time can cause eye strain, disrupted sleep, and reduced focus. Mentally, constant digital engagement can heighten stress and burnout. Stepping away allows us to recharge, leading to clearer focus and an improved mood.
Incorporating a Digital Detox
Adding short screen breaks is simple and effective. Try disconnecting during meals, before bed, or when enjoying time with family. Minimize notifications using “Do Not Disturb” and engage in tech-free activities like walking or journaling.
Tips for Success
Start with small, manageable breaks, like 10-15 minutes every few hours, and pair them with deep breathing or stretching. Set device boundaries, such as no screens in the bedroom or during social times.
Positive Outcomes
Digital breaks can improve sleep, reduce stress, and foster stronger connections when technology doesn’t interrupt interactions. Allowing the brain time to reset also supports creativity and productivity.
Challenge for the Week
Try a daily mini digital detox and see how stepping away from screens might enhance your focus and well-being.

Saint Albans Town Educational Center Fun Night and Dance: A Great Success!
Friday night was filled with energy and excitement as Saint Albans Town Educational Center hosted its Fun Night for 5th and 6th graders and a dance for 7th and 8th graders. With a fantastic turnout, students enjoyed a memorable evening that brought smiles, laughter, and plenty of dancing.
The 7th and 8th graders embraced the spirit of the dance. The return of our older students for a night of music and fun was a highlight for everyone involved.
A special thank you goes to our Student Council for their role in planning and organizing the event. We’re also incredibly grateful to the dedicated staff members who helped make the evening such a success—chaperoning, encouraging students to dance, managing refreshments, overseeing safe departures, and pitching in to clean up afterward.
Thank you to everyone who made this night unforgettable for our students!

Hands-On Learning in Action: Making Apple Cider at Saint Albans City School
At Saint Albans City School, hands-on learning is at the heart of what we do! Recently, our students had the exciting opportunity to make fresh apple cider right on campus, guided by our dedicated educators, Mark Hoben and Danny Deslauriers. The activity brought learning to life as students engaged in the entire process—from pressing apples to watching the cider flow.
The smiles on students' faces were contagious as they worked together to turn apples into delicious cider. And the highlight of the experience? Tasting the fresh, sweet cider they had made themselves!
Thank you to Mr. Hoben and Mr. Deslauriers for their commitment to creating memorable, hands-on experiences that make learning fun and meaningful.
