The Friendswood Special Olympics Team competed in the Area 22 Special Olympics Bowling Tournament on Saturday, December 02, 2017, at AMF Alpha Bowl Fairlanes on Bay Area Blvd. There were 25 teams in the tournament. The following athletes received the following awards.

November 9th, the FHS Choirs traveled to Santa Fe High School to participate and perform in the TMEA Region XVII Choral Clinic & Concert. Sixty-seven students performed in this memorable concert, during which singers were under the direction of esteemed and renowned choral directors Dr. Allen Hightower, Thomas Rinn, and Laura Farnell.

Nearly 100 FHS singers began the process of learning music for the Region/All-State process six months ago. This marked the third audition out of four, and we are proud to announce that eight students will be representing our school at the Area ("All-State") audition on January 13th. Monday night, the FHS Band participate in the Region 17 Orchestra Auditions at Alvin HS. Five FHS band students were chosen for the orchestra. Four of the students also qualified for Area Auditions in January that leads to the All-State Band.

FHS Marching Band competed at the Bands of America Super Regional in San Antonio. Sixty-eight of the finest bands from all over Texas and Indiana competed for 14 finalist positions. Many of the bands were past UIL State participants, State Finalists, State Champions, the best of the best. Friendswood finished 28 out of the 68. Friendswood performed their best show of the year and had a great time. The students are to be commended for their hard work beginning last May up to now and their dedication to each other. They truly exemplify team work. Thank you again to the FHS Art department for helping us with our tree props.

The Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams finished an outstanding season in 2017! The boys grabbed their third 6A Cross Country title in a row. The top two runners in the district were Brandon Lantau (1st) and Garrett McGregor (2nd) overall. The boys went on to compete in the Regional Meet and Garrett McGregor finished in the top ten in the region qualifying him for the state meet. The Girls Cross Country received their first 6A district title led by Faith Brothers, Catherine Sims, Olivia Theall, Maddie Jordan, and Rhianna Spong. The Girls went on to place 11th overall at the Regional Meet in Huntsville. Congratulations to Coach Haffelder and assistant Lindsey Adams for a job well done this season.

Boys and Girls Basketball Seasons are underway! The boys team will be under new management this season with Cliff Owens at the helm. Coach Owens and the Mustangs will be returning starters Sr. Alex Dehoyos, Sr. Tanner Bandini, and Sr. Elijah Martinez. Check out the team's website for upcoming games! The girls basketball team lost a tough opener to Dobie last Monday night, but the girls continue to improve everyday. The Lady Mustangs will return Sr. Sara Aamodt, Jr. Kinsey Cole, and Soph. Nicole Nash to the starting lineup. Come out support both of these great programs as the basketball season has officially tipped off!!

The Friendswood Varsity Volleyball season came to an end with a hard fought loss to a great Dawson team. The Varsity team finished 33-10 on the season and as Undefeated District 24-6A Champions, Bi- District Champions, Area Champions, and Regional Quarter Finalists. The JV team finished as District Champions as well and the Freshmen team finished in 2nd. We can not thank FHS and the community enough for the support that yall have given us. The Varsity boys recently competed in the Needville Basketball Invitational. The Mustangs won a pair of games on Friday beating both Magnolia West and Caney Creek to advance to the semi-final on Saturday. The Mustangs beat Magnolia West by a score of 44-39 and were led in scoring by Alex Dehoyos, who had 24. In game two, the Mustangs had a rematch with Caney Creek, and played a much better game than the first. They beat Caney Creek by a score of 59-32, and were led in scoring by Tanner Bandini (14) and Alex who chipped in 11.

Saturday was a long day for the Mustangs. They battled tournament host Needville in a close one. Needville shot the ball well and had a lead for most of the game. In the end, the Mustangs were able to battle back without Eli Martinez, who was out of the game with flu-like symptoms. The Mustangs won 68-62, and were led in scoring again by Alex who had 28 and Tanner who had 21.

The championship game did not start until 9:30, and the Mustangs were starting to feel the fatigue from playing three games in less than 24 hours. In the final game of the weekend, the Mustangs fell to Lamar Consolidated 51-37. The shots just wouldn't fall, and the Mustangs ran out of gas. The Mustangs had no double digit scorers, by Tanner Bandini had 9. For his contribution on the weekend, Alex was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 17.5 ppg.

The JV and Sophomore teams had a great weekend at the Strake Jesuit Shootout. The JV went 2-1, and the Sophomore team went 3-0 on the weekend. The Mustangs will be welcoming back new faces fresh off the football field today, as they get ready to take on a very good Shadow Creek team here tomorrow at 7:30.

We would like to congratulate Coach Koopman and his staff on a tremendous football season. We hope to continue the winning was on the hard wood. Thank you for all that you do for our boys.

The Football team got out to a fast start in district 24-6A going 4-0 with wins over Dickinson, Clear Falls, Clear Creek, and Clear Brook. Two tough losses to Clear Springs and Clear Lake followed those wins, but the Mustangs finished with a huge 40-17 victory over Alvin to finish third overall in district. The football team finished 5-2 district and 7-3 overall. The Blackshirt defense was rated the top defense in the league for the first time at the 6A level.

The tournament season for boys and girls golf is in full swing. We want to wish the best of luck this season to all our golfers and Coach Smith and Coach Devers!

The Mustang Tennis Team entered the UIL playoffs with convincing victories over George Ranch in Bi-district and Deer Park in Area competition. The Tennis team finished as Area champs in UIL competition this season. The team fell to a very tough Kingwood team, but not without a fight. Congratulations to Coach Cook and all our Tennis Mustangs for an awesome season.
