The Loker School Scoop! January 14, 2025
Dear Loker School Community,
I hope that you are well! As the parent of a fourth grader and two second graders, I often think about the topic of resiliency and whether my children will be able to successfully navigate challenging situations in a calm manner. Since they have been in elementary school, we have dropped off homework, water bottles, snacks, lunches and other items at school that they have forgotten. In early November, my son had forgotten his homework for at least the fourth time this year and he wanted us to bring his homework to school. While my wife and I were at work, one of my son's grandparents could have easily brought the homework to him. However, we made the decision not to bring his homework to him. Given that he had forgotten his homework on at least three previous occasions, we felt like he was not learning his lesson and wanted him to take more responsibility. All of this being said, I was nervous about what his reaction was going to be like that evening. At home that night, he expressed a lot of frustration that his homework was not brought to him. My wife and I explained to him he needs to be responsible for bringing his own belongings which includes homework, snack, water bottle, library books, lunch (he can get the school lunch if he forgets it as they have multiple lunch options) and instruments. While that early November day and evening was a difficult one for my son, it appears that he learned a very important lesson. Since early November, he was not forgotten a single item for school which has definitely set a new Jones family record! Last week, he proudly said that he had not forgotten his homework for 2 months and it was quite evident that this accomplishment has helped him build additional self-confidence. His strategy is to pack everything up the night before and lay everything out by the front door so he can grab it all when he exits our home to walk to school. This whole situation made me reflect deeply on my parenting style. I have found myself wanting to protect my children at all costs from any unhappiness or adversity. But, is some low-level adversity and frustration a path to long-term learning on resiliency and responsibility? In my reflection on this topic as a parent, I found the article linked below from the Richmond Hill Psychology Centre on this topic helpful so I thought that I would share it with you about building responsibility in children: Building Responsibility in Children Article I am curious what you think about this topic. The next time your child forgets their instrument at home, would you be okay with them doing note reading in class during their instrumental music lesson and not having their instrument? Would this low-level adversity help them remember to bring their instrument moving forward and build resiliency and responsibility skills? Likewise, what if your child keeps forgetting to bring their boots to play in the snow at recess? Will the low-level adversity of one day of playing on the pavement at recess foster long-term learning? I welcome your feedback on this topic and would certainly be open to discussing it further.
In addition, I am pleased to share our Team PRIDE performance on respecting property from last Thursday's School Meeting which can be found at the following link: 1/9/25 Team PRIDE Video. In addition, we had an upstander theme (standing up for what is right) at our meeting with our classroom shares which culminated with this week's read aloud which was actually a Kindness 101 video on resourcefulness and helping others with a fifth grade class raising money for an accessible playground. The video that your children watched in classroom this week can be found at the following link: 1/9/25: School Meeting Kindness 101.
Have a great week!
Best,
Brian
