Principal News
Dear OES Parents,
Is your child learning English as a second language? If so, please read on…
Do you want to know how much English your child(ren) has learned at school? By taking the MLL ACCESS test, you will get your answers!
Purpose: The purpose of the test is to monitor your child’s English Academic Language proficiency progress in reading, writing, listening and speaking in grades K through 12.
The test will take place from January 27th to March 21st. Two consecutive mornings have been scheduled for your child to take this test. Students will spend about two-three hours per day on testing. Students are expected to arrive by 10:00 AM. Testing time will start about 10:15 AM. Students will be going home by 1:00 PM. If you are providing transportation, we will contact you once your child has finished the test. A snack will be provided for students, please make sure your child eats breakfast at home before coming for testing. Transportation will be provided if you live within the St. Paul perimeters. This test is done in-person at Como Park Elementary (Door #6).
Other important and district information
The ACCESS test is given annually to monitor students' progress in English Academic Language acquisition. This test will determine if the student will need more support in English or if the student is ready to exit the program.
Educators use ACCESS results to make decisions about students' English Academic Language instruction and about placing students into appropriate classes.
Testing:
In order for us to plan accordingly, we would like for all our Online families to fill out the Parent Response Form below and to let us know if transportation is needed, whether you are or not sending your child(ren) for testing.
We will stop sending you messages once you have completed the Parent Response Form.
Click here to fill out: Access Parent Response Form
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact the respective MLL teacher or Belinda Vang at 651-744-2081 or email sppsonlineschool.testing@spps.org.

Protocol for Managing Parent Classroom Interruptions During Online Instruction
SPPS Online offers a unique opportunity for students, parents, and the school to engage in their child's education. Google Meets focus on teaching and learning, maintaining consistency with traditional classrooms. Distraction-free learning environments are essential. Issues can be addressed in Google Meets, but not during live classroom sessions. Parents can arrange private discussions with teachers, but these must be done outside instructional time to maintain the online learning environment.
Please access and get familiar with this protocol. Your understanding and cooperation are highly appreciated. This protocol is available in three languages (English, Hmong, and Spanish).

Attendance Matters
January Attendance Contest
OES is hosting another attendance contest to encourage better attendance and participation in class. The great part about doing school online, students can attend even if they are a little sick.
Last week, every class met their attendance goal!

3rd Grade
Hello, 3rd Grade Families,
This week in math, the 3rd graders finished Unit 6 which was working on an introduction to division. They completed a review on their own and we took time to go over it together.
For reading, we took the FAST aReading test, they also did an individual reading test with me. These tests help me identify their growth in reading. Students will receive an upgraded reading level within the next few weeks.
We are starting our opinion and reasons unit in Writing. This week we focused on identifying opinions and reasons. Next week, we will start writing opinions.
Please remind students to be present and active in class! It is an important piece of their learning.
No school January 20th and 27th! Have a great week!
Best,
Ms. Moua

4th graders began a new unit this week working with rectangles, area and perimeter. Strong multiplication skills are a foundation for this unit so doing flash cards or review games at home is always helpful!
In Social Studies, we are beginning a new unit about the Regions of the United States!
We have completed FAST and HMH Growth Measures this week, and I will update everyone about their students’ scores and growth by the end of next week.

News from Nurse Jenny
Vision and Hearing
Vision and hearing screening are important for every child to get regularly. Children that can’t see clearly or have a hard time hearing can have a more difficult time learning and reading. They are also at risk for having problems with their social development.
The Minnesota Department of Health recommends that children be screened for hearing and vision at all well child visits through age 10 and then at least once for ages 12-14, ages 15-17 and ages 18-20. Please contact Nurse Jenny at 651-419-1219 or Jennifer.martineau@spps.org if you have any hearing or vision concerns for your child or if you would like to schedule an appointment to have your child screened at Como Elementary.
Please contact Contact Nurse Jenny if you want more information on any other health related topic at 651-419-1219 or Jennifer.martineau@spps.org.
