Our kindergartners have been hard at work as Storybook Readers! They worked together as partners to read each page in the character's voice!

These fourth grade students are hard at work in small groups, researching different regions and creating display boards to showcase their findings to the community! What region would you be most excited to explore?
Santa Rita TK learners are making a splash with sensory water play! 💦🌈 Little hands 🤚, big smiles 😁, and tons of fun as they explore and learn through play!

Great ShakeOut: On Thursday, October 17th, Santa Rita students will participate in a nationwide Earthquake Drill called the Great Shakeout. During this time, students will practice the Drop, Cover, and Hold On drill before assembling on the upper blacktop. District staff will also practice our emergency protocols during this time. You can learn more about the Great ShakeOut here!
Character Strong - Responsibility
Our focus element for October is Responsibility. This is one of my favorite character traits because the definition has so many layers: moral obligation, having a duty, acting independently, doing one’s job, making decisions, being held accountable, just to name a few. One word that resonates with me both professionally and personally is ownership. I like this word because it encourages me to be reflective and uncover ways I can be a better leader for our staff, for our families, and for your children. Over the next few weeks, I hope you find some time to talk with your kids about what responsibility and ownership mean to you.
Please see the family newsletter from Character Responsibility:
Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th through October 15th recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. The national commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Week began in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson. Twenty years later, President Ronald Reagan expanded the observation to a month.
From the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose: Celebrate with us! Throughout the month, there’ll be hands-on art activities, performances, and themed workshops and programs to honor the contributions of local Latinos. Click here to find out more: CDM: Hispanic Heritage

Project Cornerstone and Asset Building Champions
Project Cornerstone, an initiative of the YMCA, is committed to helping all children and teens in Silicon Valley feel valued, respected, and known. Its programs and services help individuals and communities build a web of support around young people so that they grow into healthy, caring, and responsible adults.
Our partnership with Project Cornerstone allows us the opportunity to provide our students and families with the Asset Building Champions (ABC) Family Engagement Program. Through the program, adults learn to create positive connections with their own children and youth in the community and volunteer at schools to read specially selected books and lead activities that help teach valuable lessons such as making healthy choices, peaceful conflict resolution, honesty, and friendship skills.
Goals of the Program
Increase the number of developmental assets in ALL children and adults. The 41 developmental assets are the positive values, relationships, skills, and experiences that help young people thrive.
Increase the number of caring adults.
Create a common language and vocabulary.
Use stories to teach respect.
Decrease bullying behaviors.
Create a caring, positive school to increase academic achievement and engagement.
Students Learn...
How to build positive friendships
UPstander behavior
Peaceful conflict resolution
How to identify caring adults in their life
To help our Bobcats learn to love reading, Santa Rita will implement the Los Dichos Program through Project Cornerstone, an initiative of the YMCA of Silicon Valley. Los Dichos is a literature-based program emphasizing stories of Latino origin that benefits both the students and the parents.
The Los Dichos program helps parents, especially those parents who speak Spanish as their primary language, to be involved in their children’s education and instill a positive cultural identity. We begin by taking an introductory course on developmental assets by a Project Cornerstone staff. We meet monthly as a group to review and discuss lesson plans and activities before we go into the classroom.
The books we read are bilingual and teach students about Latino culture and values. Each one has a dicho, or saying, that reflects the story. After reading the bilingual book to the class, we lead activities and discussions on various topics such as family pride, peaceful conflict resolution, and other values. By leading a lesson in Spanish in the classroom, Latino students can see how important their culture is, and other students can learn about the Latino culture and respect its values. We appreciate all our Project Cornerstone readers and volunteers. If you are interested in being a volunteer, please contact Sherri Rose (srose@lasdschools.org).
THANK YOU to all the families who’ve already contributed to LAEF for the current school year. We appreciate your support early in the year!
LAEF is the only way for parents to fund LASD teaching staff in our district and help fill the gap in school funding from federal, state, and local sources. Our goal for the 2024-25 school year is $2.9 million.

Never Enough: Mattering as a Solution to Toxic Achievement Pressure
Wednesday, October 30, 2024, 7PM, Crittenden Middle School Auditorium, Mountain View (please note venue change)
Today’s students face unprecedented pressure to succeed. The drive to optimize performance has resulted in skyrocketing rates of anxiety, depression, and self-harm in teens and adolescents. Parents, educators, and community leaders face the same quandary: how can we teach our kids to strive towards excellence without crushing them?
In this eye-opening talk, Wallace investigates the deep roots of toxic achievement culture, explores its harmful impact on our kids, and delivers the powerful solution: Mattering, the psychological concept of feeling like you add value and are valued regardless of your external achievements. Wallace provides a practical mattering framework that parents and educators can use to tackle achievement pressure at home and in the classroom.
