Family Update - September 1, 2024
FROM THE PRINCIPALS
Dear Families,
Thank you to all who were able to join us last Thursday for Open House. It was great to see you! For those who were not able to make it, here is the link to the video message from Superintendent Bob Hunt.
This coming Friday, September 6, Dr. Buddy Berry will join us to kick off our Service Learning for the year. Our theme is “Together We Can Make a Difference”. Dr. Berry is the Superintendent of Eminence Independent Schools in Eminence, Kentucky, and he has been one of the keynote speakers for our teachers Summer Institute at UAHS. We are super excited to have him come speak at both middle schools. Here is a little more on Dr. Berry.
Thank you for all that you do to support JMS! We hope you enjoy the extra day with your students!
Warm regards,
Aimee White, Principal

THANK YOU FOR THE BLOCK HOUSE REFRESH!
ATTENTION 6TH GRADE PARENTS
When you visit Jones and need to move about the building for a meeting or event, you need to have your SafeSchool ID or driver's license. Your SafeSchool ID from Tremont or Barrington will not work at Jones. The first time you come, please bring your driver's license so you can sign in for Jones and then it will show up in your wallet on your phone, if you would like to use that option. Thank you!
FROM OUR MENTAL HEALTH CLINICIAN
Did you know… 50% of all mental health conditions appear by age 14 and 75% by age 24.
Increased protective factors can improve an individual’s ability to overcome adversity and prevent the development of some mental health disorders. Some of these factors can include: healthy sleep habits, supportive and stable family relationships, strong social and emotional skills, and seeking help and support early on.
Tips to support your student in developing protective factors:
-Limit access to technology in the nighttime hours to support healthy sleep habits
-Encourage membership in extracurricular activities to encourage increased social bonds
-Practice validation skills to encourage open communication from student surrounding stressors and need for help
For crisis situations that are not life-threatening, mental health and substance abuse crisis services are available for Franklin County residents 17 years and younger 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at (614) 722-1800.

MATH COUNTS
MATH COUNTS club is for any 6th, 7th or 8th grader who LOVES math! MATH COUNTS is a nation-wide middle school mathematics competition that builds problem-solving skills and fosters achievement through four levels of fun, in-person "bee" style contests. Our first meeting will be at 7:30am on Friday, September 6th in Mr. Shininger's room (246). Typically we will meet on Fridays before school, but that schedule is subject to change. No need to sign up, students should attend our first meeting and I'll add them to the email list. Contact Mr. Shininger at bshininger@uaschools.org with any questions!

ATTENTION 6TH GRADE PARENTS - CAMP INFO.
Please look for an email from Nurse Shannon if your camper needs medications while at camp. Please contact snjohnson@uaschools.org or call the clinic at 614-487-5091 with any questions. Thanks!
STICKERS ON NEW IPADS
Please do not apply stickers or write on the iPad keyboard cases, as devices may be reassigned to other students throughout the year. Reassignment occurs when students graduate, transfer, or when devices need repair.
The new keyboard cases are district property and are durable assets intended to last for several years.
Instead of stickers we encourage students to personalize their iPads using other means, such as utilizing colorful silicone bands to provide a way to uniquely identify your device from other students.
IPAD PARENT CONTROL INFORMATION
The UACS Technology department provides 2 ways for caregivers to manage screen time, review web history, manage apps and internet access after school hours. The typical built-in Apple ScreenTime and Parental controls do not work because the district manages iPads for school use at a district level - the typical consumer level settings are not available. Caregivers can review web activity and disable internet access through the Lightspeed Relay Parent Portal. Additionally, caregivers can control app access and set rules through the JAMF Parent app. Questions may be directed to FamilyTechHelp@uaschools.org.
