Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 8th March 2024
World Book Day
Sharing our Love of Reading
We had a fabulous day in school on Thursday. It was wonderful to see the children in some amazing costumes (thank you parents!) and cosy pyjamas. We didn't lose sight of the main objective of the day though, and it was clear that the children loved having special reading time. Year 1 and 2 welcomed parents into the hall where there was a buzz of excitement at reading with them in school (or in some cases with Mario and Luigi!). Reception and Key Stage 2 were also able to share books with parents and carers in their classrooms. Thank you to everyone who came along.
Nursery's World Book Day
The Nursery children are looking forward to the last day of term, when parents and carers are invited to share books with the children first thing in the morning. However, they still celebrated World Book Day. The staff report: We had a fabulous World Book Day in Nursery, all the children looked amazing! The children enjoyed exploring two different traditional stories 'The Gingerbread Man' and 'Goldilocks and The Three Bears'. During the day we listened to both stories, tasted porridge and found that it was 'just right'. The children learnt the Goldilocks song and Makaton signs to accompany. We finished the day with a lovely Teddy Bears' Picnic, read by our own Goldilocks whilst we cuddled our teddies from home. What a super day we had.
A Capital Time in London
We have hardly been able to keep track of all the places visited by our Year 6 explorers on their visit to London, but they include The National Gallery, The Tower of London, The Houses of Parliament, Shakespeare's Globe and The Science Museum. Also thrown in a couple of meals out in central London and a show! Mr Holmes reports that they have been impeccably behaved and a real credit to the school. We are looking forward to hearing all about their adventures when they return. Huge thanks also to all the staff who have enabled the trip to happen: Mrs Stewart, Mrs Baker, Mrs Shawcross, Mrs Roberts, Mrs Powell and Mr Holmes.
Well done!
We are also very proud of the Year 6 who have been in school this week. They have done some amazing work, including drama workshops to portray Romeo and Juliet. They have been role models for the rest of the school and joined in with World Book Day with enthusiasm. Thank you also to Miss Haslam for preparing and leading great lessons and activities whilst Mrs Shawcross has been in London.
Inspired Art by Year 6
Art Inspired by David Hockney and Fiona Rae
The children in Year 6 have been exploring the work of the artists David Hockney and Fiona Rae. They discovered how each artist created their work and considered the ingredients that make the artist's work distinct. The children then set about their own pieces of work using acrylics on canvas board employing a range of skills and techniques. They finished their work by adding details and patterns. Well done Year 6, some very beautiful work.
Amazing Acts
The children in Year 5 and Year 6 visited Bethel Church this week to learn all about the Book of Acts from the Bible. They were taken through all the amazing events in Acts with drama from key characters. After hearing about what happened after Jesus ascended to heaven the children put together and performed mimes to retell events from Acts. They concluded the afternoon by completing a quiz.
A huge thank you to all the team at Bethel for a really interesting and entertaining afternoon.
Year 2 Dance Festival
Dancing Stars
Year 2 took part in a dance festival at Outwood Secondary and they were amazing! Together we created a dance to share with the other schools and joined in with some group dances too. We had such a fun morning and came away with a certificate for the dance with the best style. Go Year 2, we are super proud of your efforts and behaviour.
Comic Relief Red Nose Day - Friday 15th March 2024
On Friday 15th March it is Red Nose Day. The Ambassadors have decided that children can come in bright, bold and whacky non uniform for a small contribution (which will be made on ParentPay, no cash in school, thank you). There will be a create a nose competition and a joke quiz!

Every week we enjoy hearing about the wonderful work in each class in our Celebration Worship. Well done to all our Stars of the Week.

Year 3
Harvey for his fantastic team work and brilliant directing and editing skills making a book trailer.
Year 4

Year 5

Big Question!
What is more precious, gold or water?
As ever, the children provided thoughtful answers to our question of the week:
Half of both, water is good for your body and gold is good for buying stuff. Year 1
Gold to buy a safe place to live; water as you cannot live without it. Year 2
Water keeps you alive; gold is for things you want. Year 3
Water as if you are baptised in holy water, God is with you. Year 4
Gold can be more precious as you can use it not just to get water but other basic needs such as food and shelter. You can buy clothes with money from gold and donate it to those who need it. We should think of children who don't have access to enough water. Year 5
We think water because you need water to live whereas gold is just a want. You could have millions of pounds, even ten bars of gold, but it wouldn't be worth anything if you don't have water to live and enjoy it. Year 6
Friends of the School
The Friends are kindly organising an Easter Egg competition again this year. Children may decorate hard boiled eggs or create a design on paper. All entries should be brought to the school hall between 8.30 and 8.45am on Wednesday 20th March. The theme is 'Superheroes'. Please make sure you name all entries, thank you.
