Focus on what Matters
Our new yearly theme, 2020; Focus on what Matters, captures what we in our hearts at Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit know to be true about our students - they MATTER. It is our responsibility day in and day out to be sure their safety and learning is our top priority. We are more focused on this mission now than ever, as we all grapple with the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to our schools.
Annie Award Winner
Congratulations to this year's Annie Sullivan Award winner, Special Education Teacher Clifford Castoral! You inspire us with your creativity and passion for helping children learn. Continue to focus on what matters! Cliff accepted this award via Zoom. You can view his speech here.
Virtual ESY
Virtual extended school year may have taken on a new format this year, but learning continued just the same. Seen here: screenshots of online activities during a deaf/hard of hearing class! Helping children learn means accommodating even the most challenging circumstances with creative solutions! Other teachers taught virtual cooking lessons, facilitated morning meetings, and more with the help of Zoom.
Bike & Stroller Distribution with Variety
Variety - the Children’s Charity International
partnered with Blackburn's and Rifton, distributed adaptive bikes and strollers to 8 of our students at an exchange that took place at Flying Aces in Weatherly. These adaptive bikes and strollers give kids with special needs the means to increase their movement, especially while outside. Bikes and strollers donated from Variety are provided to families at no cost.Mask Safety Commercial
One thing all students have had to learn this year is mask safety. Some students have an easier time than others with the masks but we have seen many students wearing them without a thought, while still working diligently in class. School buildings generally require masks due to new safety precautions related to COVID-19.
Unplugged Connections
Unplugged Connections, a project in partnership with Colonial, Berks and Schuykill Intermediate Unit, helps bridge internet access gaps with students who need to learn virtually. This initiative distributes Raspberry Pi devices to students, which allows them to access content over a wireless internet network. All the student needs is a wi-fi capable device and an electrical outlet!
American Education Week
American Education Week comes around once a year to celebrate our educators and other unsung heroes in public education! While we visit classrooms and receive various submissions we see just how much our teachers and classroom staff is doing to adapt to the new normal in 2020. Visit our YouTube to stay tuned during the week of November 16th!
White Cane Safety Day
The National Federation of the Blind celebrates White Cane Awareness Day every year on October 15th. White Canes are used by blind individuals to better and more safely move around in public spaces. It's important to understand how we can respect those with white canes!
Bike & Stroller Exchange
Yet another bike and stroller exchange has taken place with students and their happy families, this time at our Transportation Campus in Walnutport! Variety Children's Charity is to thank for another round of adaptive bikes and strollers at no cost. Our students use these for years to come and are able to more safely explore the world around them.
Advocating for Early Intervention
Thanks to the services Early Intervention students receive, they develop and learn to their fullest potential and are able to enter elementary school better prepared for success. Thousands will either require no special education services, or the level of support they need will be reduced. Ensure EI programs receive fair funding by visiting the links below!
Education in Pandemic Times
Teachers, bus drivers and school staff are unsung heroes! In these times, they have adapted beyond measure to make sure our students are still able to safely learn - virtual or face to face. Students have diligently been wearing masks, sanitizing their hands and work stations and learning how to pivot in these times of uncertainty. Learning has taken on a different face amidst Coronavirus concerns. Classrooms are hybrid, meaning half virtual and half face to face, fully virtual, or fully face to face - which leads to stricter safety reforms. Whatever the case may be, Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit is working to be sure our students are safe, cared for and reassured.
