PCMS Weekly Update
May 3, 2024

Good Afternoon PCMS Families!
Even though the calendar says May and there are only 3 weeks to go, thereβs still a lot to accomplish this school year. With Teacher Appreciation Week this week, we want to let our teachers/staff members know how grateful we are for them! Nothing makes them feel better about what they do than hearing positive things from their students or their studentβs families. So we would love for you to Call Out a Teacher for all that they do for your child by clicking here and sharing something that you or your child is grateful for about them. You can submit a specific staff member's name or you can leave it blank with a more general comment about the staff here at PCMS. Either way, weβd love to be able to share some of the ways that theyβve impacted your child!
MAP testing has gone very smoothly this week as we finished the ELA portion of state assessments. Next week we tackle Math! Speaking of MAP testing, it is crucial to acknowledge that it can add stress for students. To support students in managing test anxiety, families can implement strategies at home to help. Encouraging deep breathing exercises like 5 Finger Breathing can help students relax, while the 1+3+10 Strategy by Dr. Michele Borba teaches calming techniques. Prioritizing a good night's sleep is essential for reducing stress levels. Additionally, emphasizing doing their best during tests and forgetting the rest are key messages to convey to your kiddos. Continue to encourage your student to FINISH THE 4TH QUARTER STRONG with their grades and their choices. We want to finish better than we started!
Have an amazing weekend and GO PIRATES!!
π Check Out What We Did This Week
6th Graders heard from guest speaker, Hayley Hill, who owns a restaurant in Weston and shared her expertise in previously owning a food truck with the kids. The students will be diving into a project in which they get to create a food truck with a business plan, create their own menu and develop their marketing plan as well. Hayley shared her business plan, marketing plan, etc. with the kids and how she problem-solved making a profit for her business.
7 Grade Career Speaker Series continued with the topic of Agriculture Careers. The speaker on Thursday was Mark Stewart from Agriculture Futures of America.
Mrs. Robertson's class launched a couple rockets on Friday!
π Pirates in Action
- Robotics: Our Robotics team ended up in a tough bracket at Worlds this week and ended up 5-3 in their matches. At one point, they moved up to 32 place. We are super proud of how they performed and represented Platte County!
- Archery: Good Luck to Archery as they head to Nationals next week!
Track: Our track and field team finished the season by traveling to Kearney. A storm passed through bringing lightning and thunder so we did not finish. However, before the cancellation, we had a lot of success!! Noelle Boekhout won the 100m Hurdles, Addison Stone won the 100m dash, and the girls 4x800m team also took gold. For boys, Emmett Hughes won the 7th grade Triple Jump. This season was full of Personal Records and School Records and the coaches are very proud of the commitment, integrity and competition displayed by the team throughout the season!!
Special Olympics: Congrats to the Special Olympics Team for coming home from the 2024 Spring Games with a total of 23 - 1st place, 19 - 2nd place, and 5 - 3rd place medals!
This Week's Pirates of Character 𧑠Focus
- 6th Grade Connected through Perspective Taking. This was the 2nd of 2 sessions on perspective-taking. Learning to understand others' perspectives is a fundamental social skill important for making friends, solving conflicts, and working in groups. In this session, we explored and practiced "perspective-getting" by actively asking questions of each other to better understand the perspectives behind their thoughts and opinions - rather than simply assuming we know.
- 7th Grade worked on Understand Mental Health and Well-Being. This was the 1st of 4 sessions on mental health and well-being. Recent science has shown that we can benefit from increasing our well-being (which we use synonymously with mental health) even when we struggle with mental illness and lifeβs challenges. Well-being matters for all of us and in this session we learned about three types or aspects of well-being.
- 8th Grade assessed their time management skills and identified areas for improvement. We took a time management self-assessment to see how good we are at managing our time. Time management, just like character development, is something that we can get better at with practice!
π School Reminder
Remember you can deposit money to your student's lunch account by sending in cash, a check made out to PCR-3, or by logging on to K12PaymentCenter. You can also check your student's lunch balance on K12PaymentCenter. Please make sure your student's lunch account has a positive balance. We depend on everyone to pay their meal charges on a timely basis so we can keep meal costs as low as possible.
If you think your student may qualify for free or reduced meals, please click here for information. If you have any questions regarding the Free and Reduced meal program, contact Debi Jurkovac 816-858-5420 x. 2130.
