I have to tell you...it was such an awesome first two days with our kids back on campus! We had students helping their peers find classrooms, counselors cranking through a ton of schedule support, and our entire staff working on creating great relationships in every classroom. Please take a moment to review the SHSD Family & Student Handbook with your student. The handbook acknowledgement form will be sent out via Parent Square on Tuesday September 3, 2024. We are requesting all families sign the form by September 30th.

This year Picture day will happen during school on Thursday, September 5, 2024. Students should order their ASB Card by September 3rd to receive the correct ID Card.

Steilacoom High School was one of 14 schools in the state that did not have an athlete ejected from any sport during the 2023-2024 school year. Way to go Sentinels!

Please send a note with your student if your student has an appointment and requires an early dismissal. The note should be dropped off in the attendance office before school. Your student will receive an early dismissal slip to meet you at the assigned time.

To request an early dismissal parents/guardians can also call the attendance line in the morning at 253-983-2303.

Please ensure the early dismissal voicemail or note contains the following information;

• Reason for the early dismissal

• Time your student needs to leave

• Name of the individual picking your student up

For safety purposes, a picture ID is required when picking up your student early from school. Please report to the attendance office to sign your student out.

If a student is out of school for five or more consecutive days, a doctor’s note is required for health-related reasons and the administration team must approve non-health-related absences.

The following are examples of unexcused absences;

• Student or parent oversleeping

• Missing the school bus

• Arriving at school 15 minutes late without an excusable reason

Due to changes in the master schedule, some schedules have been adjusted since schedules were released on August 20th. Students please continue to check skyward for your most up-to-date schedule.

Paper schedules will not be available on the first day of school so make sure students have their schedules saved on their phone.

If you are new and would like a tour, please come to the counseling center.

Schedule Change Requests

Students can drop in to see their counselor during their lunch to request a schedule change. The first few weeks of school, it’s important that students are in class. For this reason, we ask that students do not leave class or make an appointment for a schedule change request. Students have 7 school days to request a schedule change. The last day will be September 9th.

Schedule change requests are honored based on availability in that class period only.

Counselors CANNOT make schedule adjustments for the following reasons:

• To accommodate for teacher preference (to include preferred learning style);

• To have a different lunch;

• To be with a friend; and,

• To move a specific class to a different period in the day. (Ex: Weights at the end of the day.)

Counselors CAN make schedule adjustments for the following reasons:

• Missing a classes needed for graduation

• Academic misplacement: Academic misplacements are when a student is placed in the wrong level of class (Honors/AP vs. regular pace) or is placed in a class without meeting the pre-requisite (placed in Algebra 2 without passing Geometry first).

• Hole in their schedule: A hole is when a student has an unscheduled period.

Running Start Students

If you need an EVF, please make an appointment with your counselor. QR codes are on the counselor's door.

If you need to change your class at SHS to accommodate your schedule at the college, please email your high school counselor your specific request. Counselors will only be changing SHS schedules to accommodate their college schedule for Fall Quarter only. Not all requests can be honored due to class seats and master schedule constraints.

Our student-athletes and coaches could really use a hand this upcoming school year. We want to make the game day experience great for everyone and need volunteer to make it happen. Below is a link for each sport where coaches have identified areas they could use some help. Please consider taking a shift or two. Even if your student isn't on the team, it could be a great opportunity for you to accompany them to a game and to come see our Sentinels in action.

Training will be provided for all roles.
