Almond Thursday Word
1/16/20
Message from our Principal
Dear Almond Families:
On Friday, January 31st at 9:45 am, all Almond students will participate in a mini parade around the blacktop to show off their love of reading. Thank you to two 4th graders, Seona and Ethan, in Ms. Simon’s class who came up with this fun and interactive community-building event. During the parade, students will have a number of ways to participate. They can choose to:
Bring a favorite book to hold and show off as they process around campus
Dress up as a favorite character from a book
Make a poster to show off a favorite book
Re-design the cover of a loved book
Please come out and join us on the last Friday in January. We would love to celebrate with you.
Here’s to our collective love of reading!
Raquel

This event lends itself to a myriad of learning experiences: within the class or at home, working individually or collaboratively with peers and/or with adults, and amongst a wide range of STEM categories--Check out the website at www.tinyurl.com/LASDStemExpo to find out more and sign up! Ultimately, students get the chance to showcase their STEM with learning opportunities for the entire family.

Happy New Year!
Let’s start the year off strong by raising the final $500,000 to reach our 2019-20 goal of $3.4 million. Generous donations from families like you enable your student's school to offer music, PE, STEM, art, computer science, and more.
Donate to LAEF Today. Any amount would be greatly appreciated, and help us reach our goal of 100% participation.
Also, find out if your company will match your donation to LAEF and be sure to apply. Last school year, LAEF received over $840,000 from corporate matches!

The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Kids More Control Over Their Lives
Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020 - 7:00 - 9:00pm | MVHS Spartan Theater | 3535 Truman Ave., Mountain View
Evidence strongly suggests that age-appropriate autonomy is vital for young people’s mental health—it helps them to sculpt brains that are resilient, resourceful, and ready to take on new challenges.
When The Self-Driven Child authors Bill Stixrud and Ned Johnson began comparing notes years ago, they discovered a common problem among their young clients: kids were feeling acutely stressed. Many complained that they felt powerless to shape their own destinies. Some stumbled in high school, while others hit college and unraveled. Bill is a clinical neuropsychologist who helps kids gripped by anxiety or struggling to learn. Ned is a motivational coach who runs an elite tutoring service. Together they discovered that the best antidote to stress is to give kids a sense of control.
In this talk, Bill and Ned offer a combination of cutting-edge brain science, the latest discoveries in behavioral therapy, and case studies drawn from the thousands of kids they've helped. They advise that parents and educators adopt the role of consultant rather than manager to give kids more responsibility for their own life decisions even before they leave home.
Audience: Parents and educators of students grades 6 - 12.
