College Board News: Introducing Career Kickstart

Career Kickstart is a new program in development that’s designed to accelerate high school students on their paths to in-demand careers. It aspires to expand the successful AP model to the career and technical education space by offering a new set of career-oriented courses and exams.

Our first Career Kickstart pathway will be in Cybersecurity, and we are currently recruiting schools in Pennsylvania for our 2025-2026 pilot year. You can find more information at https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap/outreach-and-collaborations/career-kickstart.

PDE SAS: Information & Media Literacy Toolkit

In his second budget address, Governor Josh Shapiro charged the Department of Education and our Office of Commonwealth Libraries with developing resources to help schools incorporate information literacy into all aspects of learning so that our youngest Pennsylvanians have the skills to navigate the world around them. As more and more Pennsylvanians turn to digital sources for news and information, it’s more important than ever that students be equipped with the skills to discern between fact and fiction online. Information literacy is a vital component of the high-quality academic standards taught across the Commonwealth. These new resources will not replace those standards. Rather, we will provide tools that schools can use to enhance existing lessons and empower the next generation of Pennsylvanians.

PaTTAN PD: Word Problems: Additive Schemas

In this course, participants will better understand pairing general attack strategies alongside schema instruction to best help students approach, understand, and solve word problems. This course covers all of the additive schemas - total, difference, and change. In order to do this, participants will explore when word problems and problem solving best fit into math instruction by understanding the science of learning and the instructional hierarchy (IH). Participants will consider how they design learning experiences to ensure the correct instructional match for their students. They will also address five common challenges students face specific to word problems. New knowledge acquisition, resources provided, and checks for understanding will allow participants to put practices in place after completing the course.

Online course begins: October 10
