String Fest
Glenbard West, East, North and South High Schools performed as well. A special thank you goes out to all of the high school orchestra directors for conducting and working with the junior high students. Thank you to Mr. Ortega from Glenbard West, Mr. Tim Fawkes from Glenbard East, Mr. Steve Govertsen from Glenbard South, and Ms. Lauren Whisnant from Glenbard North High Schools. "It is wonderful to see hundreds of string players all in one room performing. This great learning experience makes it so memorable for our students," said Hadley Junior High School Orchestra Director, Ms. Georgia Alemis. Congratulations to all of the wonderful musicians that performed!
Day of the Dead at Churchill
El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a holiday traditionally celebrated in Mexico on the 1st and 2nd of November. It is a time for families to remember and honor loved ones who have passed away. A major theme of the holiday is the celebration of life, rather than being sorrowful over death, and you will see that reflected in the bright colors and whimsical symbols. As Dia de los Muertos becomes more and more popular in the United States, you can find many local celebrations and festivals.
Two traditional symbols are "papel picado": colorful crepe paper cut into designs and strung together to create banners, and "calaveras": skulls that are decorated with fun and vibrant colors and designs to echo the inviting and festive feeling of the holiday.
On Friday, November 1st, Churchill 3rd graders learned more about Dia de los Muertos celebrations, and then made papel-picado calaveras to hang in the hallway.
D41 Participates in Rotary Mentor Day
As part of the Glen Ellyn Rotary Club Mentor Day on November 7, Glenbard West junior and former D41 student (attended Forest Glen and Hadley) Madeleine Chiang shadowed D41 Chief Communications Officer. Students and mentors attended a luncheon at the Abbington to celebrate all of the students who participated in the program. During Mentor Day, Ms. Krehbiel invited Madeleine to intern with her this summer to learn more about communications and community engagement. Thank you to Rotary for this opportunity.
