A Message from Principal Cutone
November 1, 2024
Dear HES Families and Caregivers,
We had a wonderful week at HES, highlighted by an uplifting All Shark Meeting for our K-4 students and staff. This month, our 4th-grade ambassadors stepped up to teach our younger Sharks about the importance of a growth mindset. Through skits, they illustrated how to stay flexible and helpful, even when things don't go as planned—like when there's a substitute teacher.
Adding to this theme, Ms. Joy read The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerlizzi, a story that celebrates perseverance. Ms. Riley, Mr. Weimer, and Jafet led the entire school in singing We Can Do Hard Things, a song all our students learned in music this month. Hearing over 400 students’ voices joined together is always such a special, joy-filled moment. This meeting was a beautiful way to wrap up our Second Step unit on Growth Mindset. Our next focus will be on Emotion Management.
I'd also like to thank you in advance for supporting the time our teachers will have for their professional learning on Monday and Tuesday. I know that finding coverage can sometimes be a challenge, and we truly appreciate your understanding. Teaching is a profession that thrives on ongoing learning. Our teachers are committed to bringing their best to your children, and this time allows them to collaborate, engage with new research, and refine their teaching practices. Thank you for supporting their growth.
Wishing you all a restful, extended weekend. As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Warmly,
Christie
Call the Attendance Line If Your Shark Is Absent
Per the handbook, if your child is unable to attend school, please enter the absence in PickUp Patrol and/or call our designated attendance line, 617-848-0115, as early as possible. Soon after arrival, our office staff begins to call the caregivers of absent students if we haven't already heard from them. This is important, as we want to ensure that all students are safe. Your phone message with the reason for the absence is all we need. While an email to the teacher is helpful, it sometimes doesn't make its way to the office staff. Thank you for your help!

Notes from the Nurse
Please remember to send in the Health History and OTC form (all on one paper, both sides) ASAP. Again, we apologize if you have already filled it out online. Unfortunately, we have had a few issues with the online forms. Please make sure you fill out both sides.
If your child injures themself and requires any assistive device (crutches, wheelchair) or needs any special considerations (such as not being able to participate in PE or recess for a period of time), please be sure to let the nursing office know ASAP. We need to make a plan to ensure safety. A copy of the discharge paperwork should be submitted with the use/restrictions that the provider has ordered. Thank you so much for your cooperation in this matter.

Harwich Elementary School Council
We look to build a strong School Council this year to guide our important work. A School Council is a representative, school building-based committee that meets quarterly and is composed of the principal, parents, teachers, community members, and students. School Councils are tasked to assist principals in:
Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
Reviewing the annual school building budget
Formulating a school improvement plan
Reviewing the student handbook
If you are interested please send an email message to principal Christie Cutone at ccutone@monomoy.edu indicating your interest in serving on the school council.
