NHS Student Services

The North High Student Services Department extends warm greetings to students and parents as we begin the 2024-25 school year. We are all looking forward to the start of a great school year and look forward to working with your family. North has five counselors, each with a caseload of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. There is also a School Social Worker and a School Psychologist located within the Student Services Office. Please feel free to contact us any time with your questions or concerns.

According to the CDC, each year more than 41,000 individuals die by suicide, leaving behind friends and family members to navigate the tragedy of their loss. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death among adults in the U.S. and the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-24 and these rates are increasing.

If someone you know is struggling emotionally or having a hard time, you can be the difference in getting them the help they need. It's important to take care of yourself when you are supporting someone through a difficult time, as this may stir up difficult emotions. If it does, please reach out for support yourself. Some warning signs may help you determine if a loved one is at risk for suicide, especially if the behavior is new, has increased, or seems related to a painful event, loss, or change. If you or someone you know needs support now, exhibits any of the behaviors listed below, call or text 988 or chat by going to 988lifeline.org. Students - you can also see your counselor if you are worried about yourself or anyone else.

Do They Need Your Help? Know the warning signs:

• Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves
• Looking for a way to kill themselves, like searching online or buying a gun
• Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
• Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
• Talking about being a burden to others
• Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
• Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly
• Sleeping too little or too much
• Withdrawing or isolating themselves
• Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
• Extreme mood swings

Your senior year can be exciting, fun, and very hectic and overwhelming at times. Sometimes it can feel like there is so much to do in so little time. If you need any help/assistance with your senior year and/or post-secondary plans then do not hesitate to contact your counselor via email or schedule an appointment to talk to them. Students should be starting to apply to the colleges/universities of their choice (if they have not done so already). Please pay attention to any application due dates and required materials as part of the application process.

The North High Local Scholarships and the Sheboygan Public Education Foundation scholarships are two of the primary scholarship sources for our students. Each year there are hundreds-of-thousands of dollars (some years over a million dollars) that are given out to our North students by donors in our local area. This community support is truly remarkable and one that needs to be taken advantage of by our students. All senior students who are looking to attend a 2 or 4 year college next year are highly encouraged to apply. This is an ongoing process throughout the year - do not wait until things are due to get started with learning about what opportunities, timelines and processes exist for you.

Requesting your transcripts for colleges/universities:

Follow the instructions on the attached sheet if you need to send out your transcripts to a college, university, technical college or the NCAA/NAIA. If you have any questions please stop in (or contact) the Student Services Department (room 104).

If you are utilizing the Common App to apply to colleges, your counselor will be submitting your transcript to the schools that are part of your Common Application. However, there are specific steps YOU must follow to link your Common App and Xello accounts and prompt your counselor to submit your materials. Need your GPA? Check your Portfolio in Skyward and reference your last report card (please note that if you took a summer 2023 course you need to contact your counselor for an updated gpa). The GPA that should be reported out is your unweighted, cumulative GPA (not your weighted GPA).

The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Federal Student Aid has indicated they will be ready to offer the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) starting December 1st of 2024.

There will be an informational meeting on Financial Aid and the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) scheduled at North High School on Wednesday, October 23rd at 6pm in the North High Commons. We will have a college rep talking through any updates and information regarding the FAFSA application and process.

If you sign up a pass will be sent to you the day the rep visits North. Please be sure to sign up by the end of the school day - the day before the rep visits to ensure that a pass will be sent for you.

Welcome to North High School. We hope you’re enjoying your first few weeks of high school and are getting settled into your routine. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your school counselor. Lots of information can be found here, including links to easily schedule an appointment with your counselor. More information will be provided throughout the year to continue to help you get adjusted to high school expectations and procedures, and prepare/plan for life beyond graduation.

Youth Co-Ops through Inspire provide students (age 16+) the opportunity to apply for hands-on work experience in the fields of manufacturing, skilled trades, maintenance, automotive and hospitality. Youth Co-Op students receive a 9 week training plan under direct supervision of mentors to gain an introductory understanding of local industry while earning an hourly wage and academic credit.

On Monday, October 7th @ 6:00 PM, there is Work Based Learning Info Night & Employer Event for students interested in Youth Co-Op. It will be at UWGB Sheboygan Campus in the Phoenix Room. Please see this link for more information and the application: Here

With the advent of Lakeland University CAPP courses being free year for SASD high school students, along with the other CAPP and Transcripted course opportunities that students have access to, it is important to understand what it means to be "officially enrolled" in these types of courses. CAPP and Transcripted courses mean that those courses are offered for college credit and that students can/will receive a recorded grade on a college transcript. This means that a student's official college G.P.A. also starts with a CAPP or Transcripted course(s) taken in high school. Any/all CAPP or Transcripted courses that are taken in high school - and that college credit is granted for - needs to be reported to colleges when filling out college applications. CAPP and Transcripted course processes, timelines and procedures for signing up for - or opting out of - college credit can be answered by the teacher of the CAPP or Transcripted class.

There will be a district letter coming out very soon regarding the enrollment process of students into the Lakeland University CAPP courses starting this year. All other CAPP courses will still have their official enrollment processes and deadlines (as it was previously).

Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch may apply to have their classroom and behind-the-wheel driver training classes paid for through the Driver Education Grant Program. For more information, click here. The DOT approved list of Drivers Education programs can be found here. Please note, SASD does not offer drivers education and is not affiliated with any particular program on the list.

All 9th-11th grade students are eligible who are either 1) a first-generation student (neither birth parents graduated with a Bachelor's Degree) or 2) qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch or are 3) a Minority.

The Sheboygan Chapter of People to People has been sponsoring an annual exchange with Sheboygan’s sister city, Esslingen, Germany since 1970. Esslingen is a charming city of about 100,000 located in Southwest Germany on the banks of the Neckar River, near Stuttgart. Since that time over 170 Sheboygan County high school students have participated in this unique program. Many have made life long friendships. “For us, the student exchanges provide the best avenue to help foster the understanding of people and cultures with the youth of our community.” said President - Bob Quasius. People to People exchanges are a rare opportunity to experience another country and culture first hand. The student is not staying in a hotel and visiting local tourist attractions. They stay in a family home learning how a German family lives on a daily basis from food, job to transportation and more.

One of the Career Readiness goals adopted by the Sheboygan Area School District, is for each student to have acquired a minimum of 25 hours of community service while in high school by the time a student graduates. Please note that this is not a graduation requirement. The Community Service hours form can/will also be utilized to document community service hours that are being done by a student seeking to meet the community service hours requirements for National Honors Society. Please print off the attached sheet, fill in the needed information, get the needed signatures and hand the form in to your high school counselor. If you have any other questions please contact your high school counselor.

Students: If you are submitting any community service hours forms AND you want those hours to be counted towards your National Honors Society (NHS) requirements then you will need to:

1) have a counselor or Student Services Secretary make a copy of your form(s) - and then

2) keep your original form(s) until your service hours are to be turned in for your NHS application.
