Hello DeMello Families!
Happy Friday!
As always, we've had another big week of teaching and learning here at DeMello😊
This week I was able to see some excellent literacy instruction in grades 2-4. Your students are working hard on reading and writing. Mrs. Pickering's students learned about how the earthquake in Haiti impacted children who lost their schoolhouse. I watched on as students worked on a "problem and solution" paragraph about the text they read. In Mrs. Reynolds's class, students engaged in personal narratives about a notable event in their lives. Our third graders were discussing phonics rules, including the 1-1-1 rule (3rd grade families--ask your student what it is). And finally, Mrs. Baker's and Mrs. Couto's 4th graders were discussing poetry by William Carlos Williams, Walter Dean Myers, William Blake and more! We have been very impressed with the challenging and engaging lessons our students have been so enthusiastically digging into! I look forward to watching them learn and grow in the weeks and months to come! As always, a big shout out to our incredible teachers who bring the joy of learning to their students every single day.
This week we celebrated students at our first DeMello Student of the Month assemblies of the new school year. Our focus trait for September was respect and it was a joy celebrating our students K-5 who were recognized for going above and beyond in demonstrating respectful behavior towards their classmates, teachers, staff and themselves. For the month of October we are focused on positivity and we are looking forward to celebrating a new group of role models are our next assembly in a few weeks!
This week also marked our first official 4th grade field trip. On Wednesday, our 4th graders travelled to Chamberlain Farms for a day of hayrides, corn mazes and pumpkin picking! The students came back with smiles on their faces and a better understanding of how our local farms operate. Thanks to our friends at Chamberlain Farms for sharing their beautiful grounds with us.
That's a wrap for this week! We hope you enjoy the long weekend with your brilliant students! We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday!

DeMello Annual Pumpkin Book Character Contest Is COMING SOON!
You may remember that we started a new tradition at last year. With the help of our DeMello Literacy Committee, we launched our first schoolwide Pumpkin Book Character Contest! We invited students to decorate a pumpkin in the likeness of a favorite character from a story. What fun we had!! We are bringing this wonderful event back this year and can only imagine what creations we will display throughout our school. Please see the flyer below for more details. We have small craft pumpkins available to students who need one--please reach out to your student's teacher if you'd like us to send one home. Please be mindful that we have a limited number and make your requests asap!
Monitors Still Needed!
We are still looking for a lunch/recess monitor! If you are available weekdays from 11:00-1:00 and would like to work with the wonderful students of DeMello, please reach out to me!
STILL Looking for VOLUNTEERS
DeMello School needs your help! We are looking for volunteers to assist us at recess anytime between 11:00 and 12:35. Volunteers would be responsible to helping to run games (soccer, football, kickball). Any time that you can give would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email me at if you are interested in helping 🙂
Donations Needed!
Thanks to a grant written by our Instructional Technology Coach, Mrs. Voci, we will be transforming part of the DeMello Library into a makerspace! An alternative to traditional recess, selected students will be able to spend their lunch recess designing and creating with Mrs. Voci. In order to provide students with a range of materials we are asking families to donate some used items their children may no longer play with, such as MagnaTiles, building blocks, Legos, Kinex and craft supplies. No worry about cleaning anything--we will gladly do that😊 Thank you in advance for your donations!
