Read, Learn, Lead
Super Readers are Super Leaders!
Welcome back Huebner Huskies! I am so excited about this new year in the library. I have so many plans for this year to get everyone pumped up about reading! Our favorite reading programs will make a return, plus some brand new programs - Building Genre City and Fiction Fair are a few that you will find out more about as the year progresses.
Take a moment to scroll through this newsletter for some library information and other goodies. I hope you find something helpful!
This year, I decided to have a theme that would permeate my library programming, and what is more exciting for kids than superheroes? I pledge to fight the evils of aliteracy and get kids reading! I want every Husky to call themselves a reader because they choose books!
So who is ready to be a Reading Hero?!
Your Friendly Neighborhood Librarian,
The Relentless Reader
aka Mrs. Watts
It's a Bird! It's a Plane! No! It's a Book!
- Students in Kindergarten may check out 1 book at a time. The checkout period is 1 week.
- Students in First and Second grades may check out 2 books at a time. The checkout period is 1 week.
- Students in third-fifth grade may check out up to 3 books at a time or 2 books and 1 magazine. The checkout period for books is 2 weeks and 3 days for magazines.
- Return your books on time! This allows you to check out something new!
- If a book is lost or damaged beyond repair, there will be a fine equal to the cost of the book's original purchase price.
Teachers - The Ultimate Superheroes!
- Turn in library books first thing in the morning. This allows us to get as many books checked in before classes start coming down. If you bring your books in right before or as your class is walking in the door for check-out, we will not have much time to get those books checked in before students are ready to check-out!
- Be on time for your library check-out. I know your day gets busy and you may lose track of the time, but being on time is really important. Fifteen minutes is not much time to check-out, and with back-to-back classes, every minute counts! Perhaps set an alarm on your phone that can go off a few minutes before your scheduled time each week.
- If you need to change your time, please see Mrs. Martinez or myself to reschedule.
- There has been a change to the check-out limits in fourth and fifth grade. They may only check-out up to 3 items at a time. The check-out period is still two weeks.
- If you need anything at all, please ask! We are here to help service you!

Graphic Novels: My Secret Weapon Against Aliteracy
- Reluctant readers LOVE graphic novels! With stimulating visuals and text bubbles, reluctant readers are more likely to start AND FINISH a graphic novel.
- ESL students can benefit from reading graphic novels. The illustrations can provide clues to help decipher the written text.
- Graphic novels can benefit ALL students with inferencing skills. Due to the limited amount of narration, students have to use the frames and illustrations to infer character's feelings or missing events. Also, many graphic novels use complex vocabulary that readers can define using picture clues.
- Gifted students are challenged by the ethical issues presented in graphic novels.
How can you use graphic novels in your instruction?
- Teach literary themes such as good versus evil, heroism, overcoming adversity, and injustice.
- Springboards for creative writing. Students can write dialogue for prose-heavy text or write their own graphic novels.
- Analyze characters' emotions, foreshadowing, or point-of-view using the graphic novel's artwork.
For more evidence of why graphic novels are "real" books and have a "real" place in our instruction, read these great articles.
