Please feel free to share the following Holiday and Winter Safety tips with your building, family and friends.
The holiday season is a special time for giving thanks and focusing on family and loved ones. Help to ensure your family and friends are safe with the following tips:
- Thaw your meat, poultry by using the refrigerator method, cold water method or in the microwave. Do not thaw your meat on the counter at room temp.
- Make sure to wash your hands often and before and after preparing food. Hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of disease.
- Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw meats
- Use a food thermometer to unsure your food has reached a safe temp. (poultry 165degrees, ground meat 160degrees, beef and pork 145 degrees)
- Place your leftovers in the refrigerator within 2 hours of being cooked. They are safe in refrigerator for 4 days.
- Keep alcohol away from children
- Some holiday plants are poisonous and should not be placed where children or animals can reach them. (holly, mistletoe, poinsettia)
- Inspect toys for chipping paint. Paint from other countries may contain lead.
- Keep items containing batteries and high powered magnets away from children and pets. If swallowed they can be extremely dangerous to the digestive track.
- Review toy recall notices before purchasing presents and avoid those on the list.
- Now is a great time to have all fuel burning appliances inspected. (hot water heaters, furnaces, ovens, dryers, fireplaces)
- Install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Test them monthly and change batteries every 6 months
- Do not use a gas oven to heat your home
- Do not run your vehicle in an attached garage even with the garage door open
- Do not use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline or charcoal burning device inside your home, basement or garage.
- Traveling guests in your home means extra coat pockets, purses and suitcase that may contain medications or other toxic items. Keep them away from the reach of your children and animals.
Have a safe and joyous holiday season! And as always thank you for helping to keep everyone healthy and safe!
Odyssey & Voyagers
In the month of December, the 7th grade Odyssey Team teachers have many exciting learning opportunities planned. In Mr. Varner’s science, students will continue learning about chemical formulas, molecules, and compound molecules. In ELA, students will continue with Act 2 of A Christmas Carol. The students have been creating a graphic novel of the play as we read and are excited to finish that. In math classes, students will be taking our FastBridge screener and we will begin working on Module 5: Multiplying and Dividing Rational Numbers. Ms. Camacho’s students will continue learning about digital citizenship. Finally, in Kansas History, students will learn more about our state’s earliest people, the historic tribes of Kansas and European explorers who traveled through the land.
