December 23-January 6th-Student break
- Staff returns January 6, 2025
- Students return January 7th, 2025
This month we will be learning about ways to care for ourselves, others and the world. We will be discussing things that people and animals need and ways to help them meet their needs. We will be working on counting objects to 10 and making sets of ten in different ways.
Kindergarten is flying by, and we are having so much fun! Remember to practice letters/sounds, sight words, counting to 100, writing ABCs and numbers to 20, and reading together each night. This will be especially important over the winter break to prevent regression. We appreciate your support! Here is a look at what is to come in December.
- Reading: In reading students will continue to explore the essential question of what living things need. We will identify text structure in persuasive texts and explore their purpose. Unit 2 will wrap up by applying everything we have learned with a project-based inquiry. The topic? Getting a pet!
- Math: In math we will continue with addition and then jump into subtraction. Students will be using manipulatives, pictures, and number sentences to model their understanding.
- Science: In science students will continue to learn about Earth’s materials and systems. We will be observing and describing weather and the seasons.
- Social Studies: In social students will learn about symbols and patriotic holidays.
- Math: Learning to count and recognize number patterns forwards and backwards to 100. Students are introduced to place value tens and ones by learning to 2-digit numbers in groups of tens with some leftover.
- Reading: students will learn to identify elements of drama such as setting, characters, dialogue, and plot. Social Studies: students learn geography, map skills, and physical characteristics of places. Science: students will understand how water moves rocks and soil and describe properties of various bodies of water such as lakes, streams, puddles, etc.
-In Math students will continue using strategies for adding and subtracting, now involving 3-digit numbers. Students will also be able to apply various strategies they have learned over the first semester to solve word problems.
-In Reading and Writing, students will begin researching a topic of interest. They will generate their own questions, gather information from various sources, organize the information, and present their findings through a research paper.
-In Science students will be applying what they have learned during the field trip to the Planetarium to deepen their understanding of the sun, earth and moon. Students will be learning about the different moon phases and about other objects in the sky.
-In Social Studies, students will discuss the importance of national symbols and what it takes to be a good citizen.
- Wrapping up the first semester, we will complete our research scrapbook project in Reading/Writing. Then, we will begin our new unit analyzing plot and setting in historical fiction and using elements of narrative text writing in our own historical fiction story including a focus on illustrations and subject verb agreement.
- For Math, we are completing our unit on Division and will begin learning strategies for multiplying 2-digit by 1-digit.
- In Science, we are finishing our study of the Sun, Earth, and Moon orbits in relation to one another and will begin identifying the order of solar system from the sun.
- Finally, in Social Studies, we are finishing our unit on Government and Citizenship by studying heroes who exemplify good citizenship and decision-making skills
*In Math - Students will learn ways to decide how two numerical expressions are related. They will learn that an equation is a number sentence that uses an equal sign (=) to show that two expressions have the same value. To determine whether two numerical expressions are equal, students will evaluate each expression or use number sense to compare them. If both have the same value, the expressions are equal. If not, students will use the less than sign (<), the greater than sign (>) or the not equal to (?). Students will use number sense and computations to decide how two numerical expressions are related, according to TEKS 4.5.
*In Science, we are learning about the Earth, Sun and Moon System.
How do we know what the weather will be like at different times of the year? Does the moon always appear the same way in the sky?
By the end, your child will be able to
· investigate weather patterns in different areas of Texas
· predict patterns in the observable appearance of the moon
*In Literacy: Unit 3 Diversity
We will be reading:
· Realistic Fiction Stories
How can we reach new understanding through exploring diversity.
Don’t forget to have your students read 15 minutes nightly.
*In Social Studies we will continue to learn about Republic and Statehood.
- The Texas Revolution
- Key Figures of the Texas Revolution
- The Republic of Texas
- The Annexation of Texas
- Texas is Growing
Season’s Greetings, from 5th grade!
Reading: We are embarking on a journey through realistic fiction through reflection. Students are analyzing character relationships, theme, and author’s purpose to build enjoyment of reading.
Social Studies: 5th grade is studying the constitution, preamble, and branches of government. Students are making connections of the history of the voting process to the recent election.
Math: Students are beginning the task of representing and solving addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators including mixed numbers.
Science: Beginning exploration of light using prisms to see color refraction and reflection. Then 5th grade will move into studying Earth’s rotation.
We begin Benchmark testing the week of December 16th
It’s that time of the year when holiday tunes fill the air in our Maude Moore Wood Music Classes. From “The 12 Days of Christmas” to “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas” all the way to “Deck the Halls,” it is a wonderful time to be in music. As our younger students discover the magical sound of jingle bells and make up their own dances to music from “The Nutcracker,” our older students are learning about different meters and how the rest of the world celebrates the holiday season in song and movement. And if that isn’t enough to lift your spirits, our magnificent Warrior Choir is working hard to prepare a special holiday concert for everyone to enjoy. Come out on December 19, at 4:30 pm to hear their wonderful songs of the season.
We can’t believe it is December already. This month we will be having more fun in PE. The first week of December we will be working on jump roping skills with our long jump rope. The second week in December we will be going through our Warrior obstacle course then the 3rd week of December we will be having Winter Wonderland games. Please remember to have your kids bring shoes that are safe for Physical activity. (No Crocs or boots) We hope you have a Wonderful Holiday Season! See you next year.
The Coaches.
December is a great time for celebrating an entire year of great achievements and identifying opportunities for growth. Our Capturing Kids’ Hearts characteristic this month is focused on responsibility. Families, students, and the entire school are working towards ownership of our personal thoughts, words, and actions. This is a great time to set new goals, establish new routines, and to identify ways to support others. We can do this as a family by engaging: 100 family memories, empowering: One Word, and excelling: Neighborhood Sunshine Walk. Read our monthly newsletter with your student and be sure to ask the conversation starters located at the bottom. Guidance counseling topics for the month of December include helping others, perspective taking, and serving others.
