REPEATING a Message from Dr. Kara TreviΓ±o
Hey Roos,
βIf you go around waiting for stuff to get easier in life, itβs never going to happen,β she said. βWhat happens is you handle hard better."
Win the drill, not the season β think short term goals (weekly)
Find one voice of positive reinforcement - If weβre not hearing anything encouraging, the hardship becomes even tougher.
Short-term failure is not defeat - No matter how hard we try or how badly we want it, we will fail on occasion. But knowing in the back of our minds that failure isnβt fatal or a horrible indictment of our talent is a means of maintaining perspective to get through it. In essence, getting knocked down is inevitable. Quickly getting back up is a choice.

Heart of A Teacher By: Paula J. Fox
The child arrives like a mystery boxβ¦
with puzzle pieces inside
some of the pieces are broken or missingβ¦
and others just seem to hide
But the HEART of a teacher can sort them outβ¦
and help the child to see
the potential for greatness he has withinβ¦
a picture of what he can be
Her goal isnβt just to teach knowledgeβ¦
by filling the box with more parts
itβs putting the pieces togetherβ¦
to create a work of art.
The process is painfully slow at timesβ¦
some need more help than others
each child is a work in progressβ¦
with assorted shapes and colors
First she creates a classroomβ¦
where the child can feel safe in school
where he never feels threatened or afraid to tryβ¦
and kindness is always the rule
She knows that a child can achieve
much more when he feels secure inside
when heβs valued and lovedβ¦and believes in himself β¦
and he has a sense of pride
She models and teaches good characterβ¦
and respect for one another
how to focus on strengthsβ¦not weaknesses
and how to encourage each other
She gives the child the freedom he needsβ¦
to make choices on his own
so he learns to become more responsibleβ¦
and is able to stand alone
Heβs taught to be strong and think for himselfβ¦
as his soul and spirit heal
and the puzzle thatβs taking shape insideβ¦
has a much more positive feel
The child discovers the joy that comesβ¦
from learning something newβ¦
and his vision grows as he begins
to see all the things he can do
A picture is formed as more pieces fitβ¦
an image of the child within
with greater strength and confidenceβ¦
and a belief that he can win!
All because a hero was thereβ¦
in the HEART of a teacher who cared
enabling the child to become much moreβ¦
than he ever imaginedβ¦or dared
A teacher with a HEART for her childrenβ¦
knows what teaching is all about
she may not have all the answersβ¦
but on thisβ¦she has no doubt
When asked which subjects she loved to teach,
she answered this way and smiledβ¦
βItβs not the subjects that matterβ¦
Itβs all about teaching the CHILD.β

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month highlights the significant impact of Latinas and Latinos in the U.S. Their presence predates colonization and has shaped the nation since the Revolutionary War. Key treaties expanded U.S. territories and incorporated Hispanic Americans. Today, over 60 million Latinos make up 18.9% of the population, contributing to the economy and enriching the nation as entrepreneurs, athletes, artists, and more.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, U.S. Representative
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an American politician and activist serving since 2019 as the U.S. representative for New York's 14th Congressional District. Since a very early age, she has focused on equitable access to education for all. As a child, an impression on her came from when she noticed differences with opportunities in the way she was treated versus her cousins who remained in the Bronx.
Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman and Latina to serve in Congress. During an impressionable internship with the late Senator Ted Kennedy, gave her a personal and up-close view on devastating effects on families who were being separated by ICE, so this led her to work with and organize Latinx youth in the Bronx and across the country. Today, she advocates for fully federal funding towards educational programs and often states, "Every American should have a stable, dignified housing, health care, and education" (Sampson, 2024). It's great to know Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez during K.H.S. Hispanic Heritage Month!

Ms. Elvira Jefferson, K.H.S. English Teacher
We are very proud to highlight Ms. Elvira Jefferson during Hispanic Heritage month. She has been in education for 14 years and currently teaches English I on our campus. She started a career in Social Work and Child Protective Services, as a Conservator. She had the role of being the one "on-call" to investigate families, sometimes by herself which seemed extremely dangerous to her. This led her to completing an alternative certification educational program and becoming a substitute teacher. From these experiences and teaching at a local middle school, Elvira fell in love with students, especially when a light bulb went off due to them comprehending the daily lessons; however, the biggest impact came from her building relationships with all her students.
In addition, Elvira's love of teaching stemmed from her living in the same type of demographics as how she grew up and that is why she always wanted to teach in the same type of area. She stated, " The students would cling to her as though she was like their mom, and they were her babies". This was her WHY in teaching, as a substitute teacher, aide, and now a real teacher! Lastly, Elvira taught through the COVID pandemic, never taking a break, because she felt as though her students needed her the most during this time. Elvira loves Teaching! We APPLAUD Ms. Elvira Jefferson as she shines during K.H.S. Hispanic Heritage Month!
