From Your Principal
Hello parents,
Welcome to September! We have already been in school for about a month and we are already seeing great things from our students. This year we added a STEM lab in the specials rotations. When they go to STEM, they will be there for specials the whole week. During this week, they will work on a project that incorporates science, technology, engineering and math. The idea is that students get the chance to experience the cycle of starting with a question and working through a problem-solving activity to develop a solution. We have already seen amazing things come out of the STEM lab.
Even if your child's teacher does not send homework activities home, here are a few things you can incorporate each night to support your child's learning.
- Encouraging your child to read for at least 20 minutes each night can significantly boost their literacy skills and foster a lifelong love of learning. To engage with their reading, you might ask questions like, "What was the most exciting part of the story?" or "How do you think the main character felt during the story?" These discussions can help deepen their understanding and make reading more enjoyable.
- Practicing math facts with your child each night can greatly improve their confidence and speed in solving problems. You can make it fun by using flashcards or turning it into a game where they race against the clock. Another idea is to incorporate math into daily activities, like counting change or measuring ingredients while cooking, to make learning more interactive and enjoyable.
- Talk to your child about their day. Asking your child thoughtful questions about their day, such as "Were you helpful today?" or "Did you make someone smile?" can encourage them to reflect on their actions and the positive impact they can have on others. These conversations not only strengthen your bond but also help your child develop kindness and empathy. Here are a few more questions you could ask.
- "What was the best part of your day?"
- "Did you learn something new today?"
- "How did you solve a problem you faced today?"
- "Was there something that made you feel proud today?"
- "Did you work with a friend on something today?"
RCE Beanstack Reading Challenge
Our first reading challenge for the 24-25 school year is going on now. In My Reading Era challenges students to read 600 minutes by October 11. All students need to do is simply log into Beanstack and record their minutes. Most students are already asked to read for 30 minutes nightly. If students read 30 minutes a day and did this for 20 days, they can easily complete the challenge. Beanstack can be found in Classlink. See instructions below on how your child can access Classlink. Reach out to our media specialist, Lisa Christian lchristian@newcaneyisd.org if you have any questions.

Canvas
Canvas & Connecting With Your Child's Account
Students in grades PK-12 currently have access to Canvas Learning Management System. Canvas provides a single platform for students to access course materials, as well as educational apps and resources. Students are able to interact with course content, submit assignments, receive feedback, and collaborate with peers in Canvas. Canvas is accessible on the web and through mobile apps available for Apple and Android devices.
NCISD parents/guardians have the option to create a Canvas Parent account to connect to their student's courses in Canvas. The Canvas Parent Portal can be accessed via a web browser or Android/iOS app. Please click on this link connecting to the NCISD resources to get you started.
You can also reach out to our media specialist, Lisa Christian for additional support.
Remind
Remind is our number 1 way that we communicate with parents. It is synced through Skyward. The primary parent listed in Skyward will automatically be added to Remind and should see all of their child's classes and teachers. The email address listed in Skyward must be the one connected to the Remind account. If you are the primary parent and do not see your child's classes in your Remind, you might need to adjust your notifications. The following directions may help troubleshoot. Any additional family members that want to be added need to reach out to the teacher or our campus media specialist, Lisa Christian.
Skyward
Skyward is New Caney ISD's Student Information System (SIS) and official gradebook. Parents and students can use Skyward in order to view:
- Students' official grades
- Progress Reports and Report Cards
- Set Notifications
- Emergency Contact Information
