Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
We are thrilled to welcome your students back to school for another exciting year! As your students begin this new academic journey, we encourage them to explore the many opportunities available to them beyond the classroom.
Participating in extracurricular activities can have a significant impact on a student's overall well-being and development. Whether it's sports, clubs, arts, or community service, getting involved can help students discover new passions, make lasting friendships, and build important life skills.
We encourage you to talk to your student about their interests and explore the extracurricular options available at PHS. By supporting their involvement, you can help them have a more fulfilling and joyful high school experience.
One of our school improvement goals is for 100% of our students to participate in an extracurricular activity. This is a lofty goal but we will strive to achieve this goal and make sure all kids connect with school. Please help us reach our goal by encouraging your student to get involved. We are grateful for your support.

SAFETY UPDATES
Dear Parents,
The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. We understand that ensuring a secure learning environment is crucial for both academic and personal growth.
We have implemented several safety measures, including ballistic protective film on exterior doors and windows, and vaping/aggression detectors in restroom. However, we believe that a strong partnership between the school and parents is essential for maintaining a safe and supportive environment. Parents are always welcomed and encouraged to reach out to me directly with concerns or information
Please encourage your child to report any suspicious activity or concerns to a trusted adult at school. By working together, we can create a safe and nurturing space where our students can thrive.
Drill Updates:
We conducted two security drills last week:
On Tuesday we conducted a successful fire drill. The main goal of a fire drill is to evacuate the building as safely and calmly as possible.
Thursday we conducted a lock-in drill. This drill simulates a threat to the general area (not specific to PHS). We secure the building and move all staff and faculty into secured classrooms. No one is able to enter or exit the building in case of a lock-in.
Our staff and students did a great job.

CLASSROOM NEWS: TEACHING & LEARNING
Students Currently Completing MAP Assessments
Freshmen and Sophomores are currently completing MAP assessments in through their English, Math, and Science courses. These assessments measure student learning and ACT readiness in reading, math, and science. These assessments are critical to helping us measure our instructional effectiveness, identify students who need extra help, as well as identify students who may need accelerated learning. We will also assess our students in January 2025 to measure learning growth from the fall assessment.
It's very important that students give their best effort on these assessments. Please help us by encouraging your students to always do their best. I will send each individual parent a copy of their individual family report after all assessments are completed. The fall map window extends until September 6th. All parents (freshmen & sophs) can expect a family report in the week after the assessment window closes.
DRAGON BREW PREPARES FOR ANOTHER YEAR OF BUSINESS
Dragon Brew is our student led start-up venture that serves hot beverages and snacks to staff and students each week. This venture is part of our transitions program that helps build service industry skills to help our students make successful A transition to adulthood. Any student can be a part of this great program. We are offering a service learning hour that provides students an opportunity to earn course credit. This year Dragon Brew will venture outside of the school as they seek to expand their business. We are excited to provide our students an opportunity to learn application based, real-world skills.
PHS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM KEEPS GROWING
The PHS Internship program is thriving under the leadership of PHS teacher Amber Findley. Amber also teaches senior English. We currently have 85 students participating in our program. A work/career internship allows them to spend 2-3 hours each week with a business or organization, providing them a a glimpse of the world of work. Often it can spark an interest in a career and allows students to discover the important "soft skills" needed to succeed in a career or job.
All high school students are now required to participate in a work internship or work experience as a part of their graduation requirements. This is part of their Individual Career Academic Planning or ICAP. We appreciate the support of our community partnerships that allow our students these opportunities. I've listed below our community partners. Please see flyer below if you are interested in participating in the PHS Internship program.

Functional Family Therapy
Functional Family Therapy
The Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs is offering the Functional Family Therapy (FFT) program for highly at-risk youth and adjudicated youth in specific Oklahoma counties. FFT is an evidence-based treatment program designed to reduce at-risk behavior in adolescents with an 70%-80% effectiveness rate. FFT is the leading treatment to address adolescent substance use, delinquency, and family system change. FFT targets youth aged 11-18, younger siblings, and their parents/caregivers. Intervention ranges from, on average, 8 -12 one-hour sessions for mild cases and up to 30 sessions for more difficult situations. FFT is conducted over an approximate three-month period and is largely an in-home intervention that is provided at no cost to the family.
FFT is appropriate for youth ages 11-17 exhibiting frequent and high degrees of the following problematic behaviors: defiance of authority figures (home and school), aggressiveness toward other people, extreme sibling rivalry, running away, truancy, vandalism, negative peer association, poor academic performance, chronic absenteeism from school, frequent school suspensions/expulsions, current/history of arrest, bullying issues, gang affiliation, and or substance abuse.
Is FFT available to students in my county?
To learn if FFT is available in your county please click below. Counties are where FFT is available are highlighted in blue: Functional Family Therapy (FFT) (oklahoma.gov)
How to do I make a referral?
To make a referral, please reach out to your local county Office of Juvenile Affairs. FFT can be provided as a preventative intervention. You will have to make a referral to OJA services and request FFT if the student does not have OJA involvement.
